North Yorkshire's credentials as an outdoor haven are hard to beat, with two national parks - the North York Moors and (most of) the Yorkshire Dales. It's proper walking country this - James Herriot Way one of the highlights if your legs can handle 50 miles or so, or Roseberry Topping (National Trust) if you're after something a bit shorter.
Fell running, rock sports and mountain biking are all popular pursuits here too.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a great way of seeing the moors - an absurdly scenic steam railway which is justifiably popular.
Then there's York itself of course. The medieval jewel in northern England's crown, there's plenty to see and do. York Minster and York City Walls are both must-sees, as are the cobbled streets of The Shambles. If the breathtaking panoramic views at Clifford's Tower don't tip you over the edge, Castle Howard certainly will.
The brave should have a crack at York Dungeon's spooky tour for an experience that's both scary and funny at the same time.
And then there's the beautiful coast. From Staithes and Runswick Bay in the north, past Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, Scarborough and Filey, all the way down to Hunmany Gap in the south - how many coastlines can beat that? Filey beach is one of our absolute favourites.
Whitby Abbey, RHS Harlow Carr, the Ribblehead Viaduct - we could go on forever!
