1. Cissbury and Chanctonbury Rings

Cissbury and Chanctonbury Rings are Iron Age hill forts perched high up on the South Downs. Anyone who is keen for a challenging walk can make the journey on foot between the two hill forts. 2. Arundel Castle and Gardens

The majestic Arundel Castle with its hilltop location could give any fairy-tale castle a run for its money. However, the beautiful gardens are equally impressive too. The castle is the family home of the Dukes of Norfolk and dates from the 11th century. Arundel is a picture perfect little town that makes for a wonderful visit, in addition to the castle there is a beautiful cathedral, a river, fantastic scenery and lots of little shops and restaurants.

3. Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve

Anyone who loves rambling in the outdoors during a visit to West Sussex should make their way to the wonderful Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve located near Chichester. Kingley Vale is particularly well known for the ancient Yew trees that grow within it, some of which are classed among the oldest living things in Britain. There are a number of ancient monuments in Kingley Vale, as well as a variety of wildlife including woodpeckers, buzzards, red kites and diverse butterfly species.

4. Weald and Downland Open Air Museum

There’s no better way to learn about history than to see it first hand and you can do just that at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum situated in the village of Singleton. Visitors can explore buildings dating from around 1300 to 1910 as well as thousands of artefacts that provide great insight into living and working during these times. There are also regular demonstrations of traditional crafts and relaxing walks to be had in the surrounding countryside.

5. Goodwood

People who are mad for motors should zoom to the Goodwood Motor Circuit which hosts a number of events each year such as the Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival. Track days are also available for anyone who is keen to test their driving skills on this famous circuit. For folks who like to take things at a more leisurely pace, a guided tour of the grand Goodwood House and its impressive art collection is ideal for a laidback day out.

Exploring the remains of Bramber Castle is a fun and free outing that can be enjoyed by youngsters and adults. The castle remains date from around 1075 and the location is a picturesque spot for a picnic.
