Some of the finest golf courses in Britain are found in south Wales and make ideal places to visit if you’re a golf fanatic or just interested in having a go. We have put together a list of some of the best and most popular golf courses in south Wales to help you make the most of your holiday.

1. Royal Porthcawl

The golf course at Royal Porthcawl is regarded as one of the finest in the world. It has hosted many prestigious and amateur events during its lifetime including the Amateur Championship six times! The course itself has a magnificent setting which slopes down to the sea shore and benefits from having no sand hills to obscure the spectacular views. The course’s holes face in all directions, making for an interesting and challenging game where the golfer is always tested by the changes in wind direction. Visitors can indulge in a drink at the clubhouse or a good meal in the club’s restaurant. A round costs approximately £115 from Monday to Thursday and a little more between Friday and Sunday. In the winter months, the fees drop to around £60 during the week.

2. Pyle and Kenfig

First opening in 1922, the Pyle and Kenfig Golf Course in Bridgend is made unique by its natural hazards of hillocks, valleys and towering sand dunes. The affectionately named ‘P&K’ course is unusually laid out in two loops of nine holes with the second half being the most demanding especially on a windy day. The course offers some superb panoramic views across the Bristol Channel, Gower Peninsula and Welsh Mountains. A delicious Sunday carvery can be enjoyed in the clubhouse dining room. A round ranges from £55 to £75 depending on when you visit.

3. Celtic Manor

Celtic Manor golf course is a real treat for golf fans! The resort has 3 different championship courses, a golf academy and two luxury clubhouses situated in the picturesque Usk Valley just off the M4. The 3 courses are the Twenty Ten which is noted for its numerous water hazards and challenges, the Roman Road whose unique design helps conserve the criss-cross Roman roads beneath it and the Montgomerie which is known for its deep pot bunkers and dramatic downhill tee shots. Fees for a round at these courses vary from around £85 to £125 throughout the year. Celtic Manor has to be the most family friendly course with many fun activities such as Adventure Golf and Laser Combat as well as great places to eat and drink. You can also find camping nearby to the resort.

4. Rolls of Monmouth

Located just 30 minutes from Newport, the Rolls of Monmouth golf course is a championship course with plenty to offer holidaymakers. The course is considered one of the most beautiful courses in the UK with views of the spectacular Welsh hills and countryside. It is divided in half by a large wooded hill area requiring range of challenging shots. A round costs about £35 to £60 depending on the time of year. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served in the restaurant.

5. Pennard

Situated 8 miles west of Swansea, Pennard golf course has incredible views over the Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower Peninsula, which was designated the UK’s first area of outstanding natural beauty. Golfers have been playing at Pennard since 1896. Its many hummocks, hillocks, hollows, varying sized dunes and bunkers create a challenging but exciting game. The course is unique in that it is 200 feet above sea level and is surrounded by beautiful wild heather. Green fees are £50 from Monday to Friday and £60 at the weekend or bank holidays. There is a restaurant and bar at the clubhouse. The club is also good for junior golfers and is noted for its visitor friendly reputation.

6. St Pierre

St Pierre in Chepstow is no big secret. In fact, it is probably one of the most popular courses in south Wales, having hosted many top tournaments such as the Dunlop Masters and the Curtis Cup. Set in 400 acres of beautiful parkland, the course is definitely one of the most picturesque courses you’ll come across, offering a choice of two 18-hole courses. The course is mostly flat with a number of trees to zigzag your way through. The magnificent hotel behind St Pierre looks like a majestic castle and serves excellent food and drink in its restaurant. A round costs approximately £50 all week long, making it a must visit for the keen golfer!

7. Southerndown

Southerndown golf course in Bridgend is a hidden gem and a fantastic day out. With a wind coming off the sea, the course terrain offers sandy, natural contours and bunkers on top of a natural limestone heath 70 metres above sea level, offering great views across the sea particularly at sunset. The course is noted for welcoming visitors all year round and has a bar and restaurant in the clubhouse where you can relax after a game. Southerndown has hosted many top Amateur Championships games with green fees ranging from £50 to £75. The course is also great for junior players, costing £15 to £28 for a round.
