1. Catanger Llamas

A day with Catanger Lllamas is a truly unique experience! This hidden gem is situated in the heart of Northamptonshire in the town of Towcester. You can get up close to the llamas by taking a trek with them through the peaceful countryside via bridle ways, country lanes and farm tracks. The farm offers half-day treks for around £95 for 2 people with 2 llamas and farm treks where you can take a shorter walk around the farm’s 20 acre land at around £55 for 2 people and 2 llamas. This is a great way to enjoy the outdoors in a different way. Llamas are very gentle creatures and will be happy to accompany you as you explore the Northamptonshire countryside. Children up to 12 years are free of charge when accompanied by an adult and the farm is open all year round. At Christmas, the whole family can enjoy a winter themed trek with log burners to keep you warm in the visitor centre along with complimentary minced pies and mulled wine! Make sure you visit the farm’s shop where you’ll find lovely gifts and souvenirs made from warm and naturally soft llama fibre. There are several great campsites near the farm.

2. Santa Pod Raceway

Santa Pod Raceway is a well-known destination for car and racing enthusiasts! Situated on the border of Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire, Santa Pod is primarily the home of European drag racing in the UK. You can enjoy watching a spectacular variety of drag cars and bikes reaching speeds of up to 300mph! Drag racing days are extremely popular and the kids will have a great time. However, this may not be suitable for much younger children as the cars can get extremely loud. Other events at Santa Pod throughout the year include the Fast Show, which showcases some of the best modified cars in the country. The raceway has plenty to see and do with good facilities as well as fun fair rides, food and drink stalls and kid’s entertainment. Tickets prices vary depending on the event, so check the Santa Pod website before you go.

3. 78 Derngate

78 Derngate is home to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh House and Galleries. A Grade II listed Georgian terrace built in the 1820s, the house was once owned by businessman Wennman Joseph Bassett-Lowke, the founder of the Bassett-Lowke toy company specialising in model trains, cars and aeroplanes. In 1917, the house had its interior remodelled and re-designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the famous Scottish architect noted for his simple, Modernist artwork featuring right angled shapes mixed with floral motifs and delicate curves. The house is a stunning example of Mackintosh’s work and has won an award for Best Small Visitor Attraction in England. The upstairs of the house is free to enter and showcases a range of contemporary arts and crafts. You can find many great souvenirs in the gift shop while the dining room of the house has a small restaurant serving delicious food. This is a real gem of an attraction and is often overlooked, so don’t miss out! Nearby you can also visit the Royal and Derngate Theatre, where you can see a number of entertaining shows including various pantomimes like Cinderella that the kids will love!

4. Virtual Aerospace Flight Simulator

You can enjoy a unique experience on 1 of the 2 flight simulators located at the Sywell Aerodrome! The simulators are designed to imitate the Boeing 737 airliner which is flown all over the world today. Used to train professional pilots, these simulators use the latest software and technology to provide the closest experience to an airliner you’ll ever have without leaving the ground! The general public are invited to try these simulators out too. They attract visitors from all over the country so you must book a visit in advance. Prices start from £99 for a 30 minute session and there are good facilities on site. Suitable for adults and older children, these flight simulators are ideal if you love flying or just want to find out what it’s like to fly a large airliner. It’s a special experience not to be missed! You’ll find several camping and caravan sites nearby.

5. Salcey Forest

In Hartwell you’ll find Salcey Forest, a wonderful outdoors adventure that is great for everybody. With wildlife in abundance, you can enjoy a number of different walking routes great for kids and older children such as the 1 mile Elephant Walk, 1.5 mile Church Walk or the 6 mile Woodpecker walk. Don’t miss the Tree Top Walk for a wonderful experience with great views of the forest and woodland creatures hidden in the tree canopies! There are also cycle paths and bridle ways for horse riding. Stop by at the great café for tasty breakfasts, lunches, ice-creams and other refreshments or relax in the picnic area. The forest is open every day free of charge, although there is a small cost for car parking.

Another great attraction in Northamptonshire is Althorp House, a beautiful stately home belonging to the Spencers, the family of Diana, Princess of Wales. Inside, you can see the grandeur and history of the house and family through its wonderful exhibition. Northamptonshire is a great county to visit if you’re looking for something a little different to the norm. With many campsites to choose from, you and the family are sure to enjoy your stay.
