See the galaxy at the South Downs Planetarium

Why you should visit the South Downs Planetarium

One attraction that can be seen throughout the world is the sky. The South Downs Planetarium enables you to experience this natural feature up close and personal, for a trip that will leave you truly star-struck. The planetarium is located in Chichester in West Sussex and can be accessed by car, train and bus. It is one of the largest planetariums in Britain and offers an awe-inspiring experience for young and old alike.

An out-of-this-world display awaits

The planetarium offers numerous shows on various topics of astronomy. These shows are both exciting and educational, providing the opportunity to learn about the diverse and amazing things that exist beyond our earth, such as comets, planets, stars, the moon and the Northern Lights to name a few. The shows are projected onto a dome and offer an incredible way to witness astrological events that you might otherwise never experience.

In addition to being open to members of the public, the planetarium also accommodates school visits where students participate in hands-on projects and enjoy educational presentations. The South Downs Astronomical Society also holds meetings here.

Facilities and Tickets

There are a range of facilities including the Star Theatre that can seat up to 100 people. The dome in the theatre on which the shows are displayed has a diameter of 10 metres. There is also a library, IT centre, laboratory and workshop space, as well as the ability to view images from the Hubble space telescope as well as satellite weather images.

Adult tickets cost £6 per show and tickets for children under 16 years of age cost £4.00. The shows last about an hour. Thanks to the planetarium, you don’t have to wait for it to get dark before you can experience the wonders of the night sky. Plus, there’s no need to worry about cold weather, rain or cloud cover since the delights of the planetarium are viewed indoors. Though the planetarium operates year round, it is not accessible every day. It is best to plan your visit by viewing the show dates and times on the planetarium’s website.
