The site's two safari tents, Red Kite and Merlin, offer all of the romance of camping with the added luxury of electricity and hot and cold running water. Or why not try the chic en-suite shepherd's hut, with a kingsize bed and hot tub? They are all set in peaceful countryside, with the attractive farmhouse close by, and are walking distance from historic Kidwelly. Each safari tent has two bedrooms, one with a kingsize bed and another with bunk beds for the kids. There's also space for an extra fold-out bed if needed. You'll have your own private en-suite bathroom with shower and flushing toilet, and a kitchen area with fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster and 4-ring hob, as well as a cosy wood burning stove, comfy sofa and a table and chairs. There's a box full of cards and games in case the weather lets you down, or otherwise sun loungers on the decking and your own wood-fired hot tub - a perfect way to enjoy the unpolluted night skies of West Wales and stargaze. Bed linen and towels are provided. Guests in the Big Cwtch hut are treated to comfy armchairs, a fully fitted kitchen and an en-suite. Outside you can gaze out over pretty countryside or settle back in your toasty electric hot tub to take in the stars.

Safari tents are open from mid-March until the end of September, while the Shepherd's hut is open all year round.

A note from the site themselves...

We have been living and farming at Penlan since 1987, bringing up a family and milking a herd of over 200 dairy cows which kept us very busy! In 2012 we decided to branch out into tourism and share the beautiful area we live in.

We have had people from all over the world staying with us and have enjoyed hearing their stories.

Shepherd's Hut - Big Cwtch Shepherd HutDec 2023

My partner and I arrived at the site and was greeted by the host who gave clear instructions on how to make it to the hut. However, the road was fairly uneven and had potholes throughout. Although suitable for my car, many may struggle. We parked with no issues and came into a space that had a prepared fire space which was a perfect setting for us beginning. Snacks upon arrival and provided toiletries and towels made an efficient and pleasant stay. The fire did die down and ran out of logs. However after a quick call, we were told to drive back up the uneven road to meet someone for more. The hot tub area was excellent. It was easy to use and a great style for anyone who wants to use it. We loved the space and the relaxation offered. We went to heat up food in the kitchen space however, this proved to be an issue. This space was appealing as it had this option and we wanted to bring some food that was cooked by us. However, due to the pot not registering with the induction style hob provided, it refused to heat up. After many failed attempts and google searches, we were forced to drive to a neighbouring town 25 minutes away. What was meant to be a heated up, home cooked meal turned into an hour round trip. Despite this mishap, it was an excellent stay and a fantastic option for anyone looking. Issues being the road and pot issue, we would recommend to those looking for a lovely night away overlooking the Welsh views.

Safari Tent - Red Kite Safari TentApr 2023

There are two safari tents, plus other pods and holiday cottages on a working farm. You have to go through the farm to get to the tents, but this area is completely separate and they aren't on top of each other like many sites. The views are beautiful and stretch across the Gower peninsula. Tent was well furnished and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Everything you need to be clean really was - few cobwebs up high and in out of the way places, but it's a tent so spiders can get in - we even had a friendly cat manage to worm his way in to the lounge area in the middle of the night! Really lovely stay and our toddler was very sad to leave!

Shepherd's Hut - Big Cwtch Shepherd HutSep 2022

This was an amazing night away for me and fiancé. Wanted to have a quick break away so we could relax and enjoy. And that's what we got. Amazing views of the surrounding area. The hut was clean when we arrived and just amazing. Enjoyed our night with quick dip in the hot tub. The owners were lovely and so friendly! We've already recommended to some friends and family.

We are sorry but there are no pets allowed as the campsite is on a working farm with cattle and sheep in the adjoining fields.
