Tarland by Deeside has been popular with royalty ever since Queen Victoria chose the area for her home at Balmoral in the 1850s and it remains the Queen's summer residence. For a more traditional experience you can also enjoy the attractions of Tarland village, just a five minute walk from site. It has shops, a bowling green and golf course, and is a good starting point for walks, with open views towards Mount Keen, Lochnagar and Morven.

There are lots of local walking trails, and the old railway line between Aboyne and Ballater is a good cycle route
