About Wild Wool Barn

Calling all adventurers - this is the site you've been looking for! Here you have direct access to the fells, trails and lake, so once you park up, you can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and walk/cycle/run onto and around the fells direct from the door. This is the place to get away from it all and camp in blissful isolation away from crowds. This small site offers three grass pitches for two-person tents and three for solo walkers with shared facilities nearby. Boasting uninterrupted views of Crag Fell, Steeple and Pillar in the Ennerdale Valley, the only sounds you will hear are the waters of the beck and the birds singing. No WiFi also gives campers more time to appreciate the incredible views and fresh air. The site is only available to families and small groups with a maximum of 6 people at any one time for a limited number of weeks/weekends per year. You will often have the site to yourself. The site is particularly loved by families where the children can run about without fear of passing cars with plenty of space to run about and play games. Dogs are welcome too. You can also stay in the bunkhouse. Suitable for families or small groups of up to six with an option to rent the whole site, including the camping pitches for an increased group size of 12. If you love hiking, mountaineering, exploring and going to parts of the Lake District others have yet to discover, this hidden gem of a site is what you're looking for.

The site is open for weekends between 30th June and 28th August.

A note from the site themselves...

We have loved living at the Wild Wool Barn for 20 years with it's unrivalled views of the fells over Ennerdale Water. We are always thrilled when our guests, like us, understand the unique tranquillity of the location, away from any noise, or modern distractions and the opportunity to walk the fells from the door.

Families appreciate the safe environment for children to play ourdoors and of finding a campsite they can have (almost) to themselves.

Stayed here, with an online prebooking, on the first night of the Coast to Coast. I found it quite tricky to locate (no signage from the lakeside path; no mobile signal) and was lucky enough to encounter a local who knew Routen Farm. No sign of the owner on arrival (nor indeed anyone else - the site appeared deserted), but I was able to follow instructions left on the door of the house. Site was pretty exposed to wind, notwithstanding shelter provided by stone walls. Shower and loo facilities were in good order.

Small Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesAug 2023

Small campsite in a remote location. Ideal for walks around the Lake District. Was nice to stay in a ‘less touristy’ area of the Lake District.

Small Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesAug 2023

We spent two peaceful nights at the Wild Wool Barn. The scenery is wonderful. The amenities and facilities are reduced to the minimum. We couldn't store some food in the fridge. If you only want to sleep over on the site and discover the Ennerdale water area, it is a great site.
