Family camping

If you’re eager to get out and explore Lincolnshire but are strapped for cash, there’s no need to despair because there is plenty of fun to be had for free. Check out these excellent free Lincolnshire days out that provide a wealth of entertainment without needing to spend any money.

Spend a day at the beach

A day by the beach is a fantastic day out for anyone who is keen to do something fun and free in Lincolnshire. Lincolnshire boasts a range of beaches to suit all tastes, such as Anderby Creek which is a great choice for people who are seeking to escape the crowds and enjoy a quiet and relaxing day within an unspoilt natural setting, while the likes of the Ingoldmells and Skegness beaches offer a vibrant buzz with plenty of facilities and nearby rides and attractions for all the family to enjoy.

Visit a nature reserve

Getting out and about and exploring Lincolnshire’s beautiful nature reserves is another great activity that can be enjoyed for free.

Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve is situated around 3 miles south of Skegness and runs along the coast to the mouth of the Wash. The reserve encompasses an array of habitats including saltmarsh, sand dunes, lagoons and the beach and is home to a variety of bird species including Little Terns, Snipe, Skylarks and Avocets to name a few. There is also a selection of trails for exploring the Gibraltar Point nature reserve on foot.

Donna Nook National Nature Reserve h is a great choice for anyone who is eager to get up close to grey seals and seal pups. The seals give birth annually in November and December near the sand dunes in the Donna Nook nature reserve and there is a designated viewing area that enables visitors to watch these charming creatures in their natural environment while causing minimal disturbance to them. It is important to note that for the sake of the seals’ welfare visitors should not attempt to feed or touch the seals and they must remain within the viewing area and not try to approach the seals. Don’t worry though, as the viewing area provides excellent opportunities to see the seals and photograph them.

Explore a museum

The Museum of Lincolnshire Life is Lincolnshire’s biggest community museum and contains an extensive and diverse collection that dates from 1750 and spans the likes of agriculture, industry, commerce and domestic life in Lincolnshire. The museum is located within a Grade II listed Victorian barracks and also houses a WWI tank and the Royal Lincolnshire Regimental Galleries.

The nearby Ellis Windmill is another free attraction that is well worth exploring. The mill, which dates from 1798, is still in working order and can be explored courtesy of a guided tour.

A day out in Lincoln

Lincoln is a brilliant city which offers a wealth of free attractions to explore. Steep Hill was voted Britain’s Best Street and offers a variety of independent and specialty shops that range from bookshops to vintage clothing as well as a choice of places to enjoy refreshments during your explorations. There is also a handrail to assist walkers up the steepest part of the street. Walking all the way to the top is a rewarding effort not just because of the accomplishment itself but because amazing Lincoln Cathedral waits to greet weary walkers. There is no charge to enter the cathedral and the Morning Chapel provides a relaxing place to sit (and perhaps recover your breath!) while the gorgeous nave is sure to leave visitors in awe (people who wish to explore the cathedral more fully can do so for a fee).

Take to the hills

Surrounded by splendid landscapes, a day of exploring the striking Hubbard’s Hills will leave anyone enchanted by this beautiful region. Children will love dipping their toes in the stream that flows through the area and there are plenty of places that serve as very picturesque picnic spots, though there is a small café as well for visitors who don’t fancy bringing their own snacks. The area is fantastic for strolling around but is an equally lovely place to simply sit and relax as well.

Free and fabulous

Pretty beaches, great museums and historical buildings, as well as an abundance of wonderful places for exploring on foot make a free day out in Lincolnshire a very pleasing and easily achievable way to enjoy your leisure time.
