Family camping

There’s no reason to let poor weather get you down when Lincolnshire has an abundance of great activities and attractions that will keep you both dry and well entertained. If you need a little inspiration for what to do in Lincolnshire when it’s raining, we’ve got some superb suggestions for days out that will appeal to kids and adults…

Breathtaking architecture guaranteed to amaze

If you’re going to be spending time indoors, why not do it in exceptional interiors? Lincolnshire offers a beautiful range of historic buildings that are great for exploring on rainy days. One such building is Lincoln Cathedral, a striking piece of Gothic architecture that was the world’s tallest building for almost three centuries. There are several tour options for discovering the cathedral including roof tours, tower tours and floor tours, all of which provide great insight into the history of the cathedral.

An equally impressive piece of historical architecture is the grand Lincoln Castle. Construction of the castle began in 1068 and it is now getting a new lease of life as it is currently undergoing a restoration process. However, visitors are still able to explore the castle courtesy of a guided tour which is a great way to discover the history of this impressive building which served as a court and a prison. The castle usually houses a copy of Magna Carta which is currently on tour but will return to the castle in 2015.

Musing in museums

For a motoring museum with a difference, the Bubble Car Museum situated near Boston is not to be missed. This museum will rev the excitement levels of kids and adults alike as they discover more than 50 microcars as well as a row of recreated period shops that include collections of 1950′s memorabilia.

Another museum that will capture the attention of younger and older visitors is the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. This fascinating museum is an excellent doorway to discovering Lincolnshire’s diverse culture and heritage thanks to a range of intriguing exhibits that cover areas such as the military, agriculture, industry and domestic life to name a few. A trip to the museum can also be combined with a visit to the nearby Ellis Windmill which dates from 1798 and is in full working order.

Keeping the kids captivated

Lincolnshire has excellent attractions for ensuring children have fantastic fun regardless of the weather. The residents at the Parrot Zoo in the village of Friskney will delight animal lovers of all ages. The zoo incorporates the National Parrot Sanctuary and boasts the largest collection of parrots in the UK. However, there are many other wonderful animals to see here in addition to parrots, with over 100 species of birds as well as mammals such as meerkats and lemurs and also reptiles and amphibians.

Kids may be smaller than adults but they’ve often got loads more energy to burn! The Magical Castle in Cleethorpes caters to adults and children by providing an exciting indoor play area so kids can go wild while the adults sit back and relax in the coffee shop with some tasty snacks and refreshments. The huge play area is themed as an enticing castle with plenty of places for children to climb, bounce and slide and there is also a dedicated section for babies so even tiny visitors can have their fair share of fun.

Get creative and sightsee in style

You don’t have to be great at painting in order to have fun at the Pottery Painting Café. The café is situated in Sleaford and is a great way to spend a few rainy hours as you get creative with paints and pottery. The café welcomes adults and children and whatever you paint will make a lovely souvenir of your trip.

Rain doesn’t have to stop you from sightseeing outdoors either. The Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway ensures that superb sightseeing is full steam ahead even in wet weather. The railway provides the opportunity for eager explorers to ride a fabulous steam train along the coast on an unforgettable sightseeing trip. This is the only remaining narrow gauge steam railway on the East Coast and is a fun experience for both younger and older sightseers.

All-weather adventures for visitors of all ages

Rainy days aren’t anything to sigh over when Lincolnshire has so much to offer. From ancient historical buildings to informative museums, great animal attractions and exciting sightseeing train rides, these activities promise a day full of fun regardless of the weather.
