Slapton Sands Beach in Devon

Our guide to the best beaches in Devon

Considering Devon boasts two stunning coastlines finding the best beaches should be easy, right? Wrong. There are so many of them and they are all so good! Never fear, here is a list of a few of the best to be found on the English Riviera, and throughout the rest of North and South Devon:

Shoalstone is a shingle stretch of coast located close to Berry Head National Nature Reserve that is perfect for traditional seaside fun. The best feature is the 25 metre sea-water swimming pool which originally opened in 1896 and is one of the few that remains in the country.

Goodrington Sands has gentle shallows that great for young kids to splash about in or take a pedalo ride. The calm water is also perfect for waterskiing for those who are more adventurous. If the kids get bored, then family fun can be found at nearby Goodrington Park, the Seashore Centre, and Quaywest Waterpark.

Babbacombe Bay is the shingle shore to go to for any keen anglers, sailors or divers as the peaceful bay has perfect conditions for all three activities. Also, the view of the picturesque bay is worth the 300 foot ascent by foot or cliff railway to Babbacombe Downs and Garden.

Dawlish Warren is an area of outstanding beauty that is home to a variety of interesting fauna and flora. The beach never feels over crowded even though it is a popular tourist spot. During the summer months, there are numerous open air events held on the beach making it a great place for kids.

Woolacombe has won best family resort and Britain’s best beach awards. The vast expanse of golden sands is a summer favourite for families, surfers and swimmers who enjoy the waves under the watchful gaze of the beach’s lifeguards. With boat trips, horse riding, surf school, and rides, there is plenty to keep everyone busy.

Westward Ho! is backed by Northam Burrows County Park. The shoreline is peppered with rock pools for the kids to inspect all the creepy crawly delights of the sea. The area is popular with sea bass and therefore is even more popular with anglers! Local outlets can help with all your equipment or refreshment needs.

Tunnels Beach is accessed, as the name implies, through a series tunnels that were hand carved in 1820 which the kids will love exploring. Exit the tunnels to find a unique tidal pool and one of the best places for rock pool explorations in the country. The beach provides an educational day with information boards to learn all about the local area and the beach. There is also a popular bar, play hut and beach shop.

Bigbury and Burgh Island are connected at low tide, but, even when the sea is out, the Island is still accessible via sea-tractor. Whilst the Burgh has plenty of coves to explore and is famous for the hotel featured in Agatha Christies Poirot, Bigbury offers shallow waters and rock pooling making it popular with families. Away from the shore, the wind picks up and is great for surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing.

Slapton Sands (pictured above) was the location of disastrous Operation Tiger which commandeered the beach for D-Day rehearsals. Slapton is loved by budding historians and water sports fans alike. From tank memorials to windsurfing, this slice of Devon coast offers a diverse day out.

Bantham is a great family beach with a huge stretch of sand fit for sandcastle and hole digging fun. The water is shallow and kid friendly with mellow waves which are also great for learning surfers. More experienced surfers should head towards the mouth of the River Avon for more challenging rips and breaks.  The beach has convenient facilities and a great view of Burgh Island.

The term ‘something for everyone’ must have been coined with Devon beaches in mind! The good news is there are so many awesome beaches. The bad news is it really is difficult to choice the best. Westbury, South Milton, Thurlsestone, Blackpool Sands, Shaldon, Teignmouth... all are worthy contenders too! The added bonus is Devon’s coast has almost as many camp and caravan sites as it does beaches so you will never have to travel far to reach your chosen seaside haven. So use this list as a spring board to help you get out there, explore, and make your own favourites list.
