Kingdom Cycle Route, Forth Bridge

Our favourite Fife cycle routes

Fife is a fantastic holiday destination offering miles of unspoilt countryside, sweeping sandy beaches and colourful fishing villages. And there is no better way to see Fife than by bike: this is a great location for cycling enthusiasts and beginner’s alike. Below we give you the lowdown on cycling in Fife and pick our favourite Fife cycle routes.

Cycling in Fife

The Fife Millennium Cycleways is a project that has seen over 300 miles of cycle routes established throughout the Kingdom of Fife. The routes include quiet country lanes, forest tracks, old disused railway lines and commuter routes in towns.

This excellent system of cycle routes means Fife is a perfect place to get on your bike and out exploring the countryside. There are great days to be had on bikes here for everyone, from enthusiasts to beginners and from road cycling to MTB.

We have picked a selection of highlights to show you what is on offer…

The Kingdom Route

Serious cycle enthusiasts might enjoy the challenge of the Kingdom Cycle Route, a 103 mile circular route that runs between the Forth and Tay bridges. It includes a mixture of on and off-road terrain and takes in some stunning scenery, as well as the town of St Andrews and Tentsmuir nature reserve.

The Fife Coastal Path

Running all the way from the Forth Estuary to the Tay estuary, the Fife Coastal Path takes in 117 miles of incredible coastline. Although this is principally a long distance footpath, some sections of the path double up as cycle paths and make great short excursions. If you are prepared for some hard graft, you can cycle the entire path in a day but there will be some trudging along beaches.

The West Fife Cycle Way

Perfect for beginners and families with young children, the West Fife Cycle Way is an easy and flat 8 mile off-road route running along a disused railway track. It takes you from the town of Dunfermline into Devilla Forest, where you can hook up with various other circular cycle routes if you wish to continue your explorations.

Tentsmuir Forest

There is some brilliant off road cycling to be had at Tentsmuir Forest, just north of St Andrews. The area is also home to a stunningly beautiful coastal National Nature Reserve, where you can see seals and all kinds of birds. The forest is full of trails that are perfect for family cycling, and there are some good MTB tracks here too.

Lots of fun to be had in Fife

Without a doubt, cycling is one of the best ways to see Fife and spend some time in the great outdoors during your camping holiday. There are awesome routes here for everyone, from beginners to enthusiasts, taking in the best of Fife’s natural and manmade attractions. So what are you waiting for? On your bike!
