Cromer pier and beach

Cromer Campsites: Things to know before you go

Cromer is what you make of it. You can choose high-energy activities, relax with a stroll around the shops, have family fun building sandcastles, or create a holiday with a combination of all three! Make the most of your fun and relaxing holiday on the Norfolk coast by knowing what to expect around Cromer. In this guide, we’ll highlight what there is to see and do in the town so that you can find Cromer campsites to suit the type of holiday you seek.

Traditional beach holiday

If you spend all year dreaming of that classic holiday by one of Britain’s beautiful beaches, then the Cromer area will not disappoint. Cromer is renowned for its fun, family-friendly beach, which includes a pier, fun fair and pavilion theatre. There are plenty of events on the pier during the summer months. Keep an eye on the website for details of upcoming shows and activities. Cromer is also famous for its delicious crabs, so be sure to try one!

Families will find plenty of suitable campsites close to Cromer. There are also camping and caravan sites near other beaches of North Norfolk that are worth exploring, including nearby Sheringham, a traditional beach town complete with picture-postcard multi-coloured beach huts!

Cultural excursions

Cromer’s town is enriched by a wide variety of independent shops and cafes. The town does not contain a single chain coffee shop in the town – a very rare occurrence nowadays! There are dozens of lovely shops for you to explore in between relaxing or reading on the beach.

For those seeking a more rural excursion, the National Trust’s Felbrigg Hall (pictured above) sits just outside the town, in a rolling landscape of woods and natural beauty – complete with a lake! Take note that although the site is open every day, Thursdays and Fridays may have restricted access to the Hall itself. There is level access to the hall and gardens, so it is easily accessible to most. Dogs are welcome here, so long as they are kept on leads.

For even more British heritage, less than an hour’s drive away is Sandringham Estate – the Queen’s Norfolk retreat. It is open daily, with tickets costing £12 for an adult, or £8 to see only the museum and gardens.

Active antics

Despite the many relaxing activities available, there are plenty of exciting things to do in Cromer for the thrill-seekers amongst you! North Norfolk’s coast offers many options, especially if you are interested in taking to the water. Head a few minutes west down the coast to find Hunstanton Watersports centre, where you can try your hand at power kiting and other exciting activites. Another option is to spend the day outdoors at the Hilltop Outdoor Centre in Sheringham, where the endless list of activities includes archery, climbing and the Big Zipper! The minimum age at Hilltop is 6 years and booking is required.

The whole family can take to the water with Glide Surf School on Cromer beach, which welcomes surfers of any experience level and age! They are open 7 days a week and can provide all equipment for you. They also give lessons in paddle boarding, an easy-to-master type of surfing which is rapidly growing in popularity. If your family are interested in an active holiday, do remember to always keep your kids closely supervised.

The Cromer area also has plenty of campsites which cater for those interested in water activities. Some campsites are right next door to centres such as Hilltop, or even have their own lakes and rivers!

The Norfolk coastline is one of the most unspoilt in the country, so you will be sure to find beautiful scenery and wonderful holiday opportunities whichever campsite you choose! The main thing to remember while planning your visit to Cromer is how you plan to spend your holiday and how each campsite suits your needs. Cromer has fun activities for all the family by the bucket load… so all you need to remember is your spade!
