How to navigate Ben Nevis routes like a pro

In the west of Scotland, Ben Nevis is a popular choice with hikers. Read on as we give you the lowdown on how to navigate Ben Nevis routes like a pro.

Hiking Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the UK, extending 1344 metres into the sky. It is part of the Grampian Mountain Range, near to Fort William. This rugged mountain range is one of the top three largest ranges in Scotland. As the local area is only lightly populated, you’re sure to feel close to nature.

Those who choose to climb Ben Nevis will find it has one main path which runs in a zigzag pattern right up to the top. This route is commonly known as The Pony Track. You have a choice of where to start your hike as the path can be joined from either the Glen Nevis Youth Hostel or the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre. The route up the Pony Track is 10.5 miles long (up and down).

Many keen hikers choose to climb Ben Nevis as part of the ‘Three Peaks’ challenge, where you attempt to climb Ben Nevis, Mount Snowdon in Wales and Scafell Pike in the Lake District. Many people choose do this to raise money for charity, so if you’re up for a challenge then this could be a great way to raise funds for a worthy cause.
In comparison to Snowdon and Scafell Pike, the path to Ben Nevis starts much closer to sea level. This means it has a much greater vertical ascent, so be prepared for a steep track!

Tips and advice

The mountain track can be very challenging so visitors should make sure they are properly prepared and equipped. It is highly recommended that you use a hydration backpack, as they can provide quick access to hydration on the move and leave your hands free for balance. You will need to make sure you have a map, a mobile phone and several layers of clothing. We’d also recommend that you take a first aid kit.

The area around Ben Nevis can see harsh weather conditions. Many hikers choose to stay in accommodation nearby for a few days so that they can pick the nicest day to go for a climb and enjoy clear views of the spectacular landscape! If you don’t drive, it is possible to get to the area by train via the local station in Fort William.

Beginners and families

While the route up Ben Nevis is only really suitable for adults or experienced walkers, there are many nearby routes which will be enjoyable for the entire family. One example is a route following the River Nevis, which is a level and short walk lasting an hour to an hour and a half. The walk starts at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre, so it’s a great choice if you are meeting up with other people hiking up Ben Nevis, as you can all start in the same place. There are several other easy routes in the Grampian Mountain area for you to explore. We recommend the scenic walk through Achriabhach Forest, which offers truly stunning views!
