1. National Museum of Cardiff

2. Cardiff Summer Festival

The Cardiff Summer Festival encompasses a variety of fun events ranging from open-air theatre to live music as well as entertainment for the kids. There are also food and drink demos, water sport attractions and colourful carnival celebrations so you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a fantastic free event to attend.

3. St Fagan’s National History Museum

Step back in time for a superb day out at St Fagan’s National History Museum. You can explore a multitude of recreated buildings from different time periods including a church, farmhouses, mills and a tannery to name a few. You can also view craftspeople carrying out traditional craft activities in this open-air museum. Kids will love discovering the different farm animals that call this museum home.

4. Cardiff Bay

Cardiff Bay is ideal for a scenic stroll. Take in the sights along waterfront including the range of buildings such as the Wales Millennium Centre which houses the Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre. The visitor centre offers handy information for tourists as well as an exhibition room showcasing the history of the Bay area and how it developed to its present state. You can also walk along the barrage and visit the Senedd, Wales’s parliamentary building, where free tours can be booked.

5. Bute Park

Situated next to Cardiff Castle, the large and beautiful Bute Park (pictured above) is ideal for enjoying a quiet rest during your explorations. Take a relaxing seat or a gentle stroll around the area where you will find the likes of tree sculptures and the remains of a 12th century friary. Holidaymakers will also have the opportunity to view an enchanting Animal Wall which boasts a variety of realistic animal sculptures.

6. The BayArt Gallery

If you want to experience contemporary creativity, the BayArt Gallery is a good place to go. The gallery displays contemporary art from both Welsh and international artists. It also hosts educational activities throughout the year.

7. Norwegian Church Arts Centre

Located within a church previously used by Norwegian sailors, the Norwegian Church Arts Centre houses the Dahl Gallery, named after Cardiff native Roald Dahl. The gallery hosts touring exhibitions as well as work by local artists. There is also a café located in the church if you fancy a refreshing drink and a bite to eat.

8. St John the Baptist Parish Church

This beautiful church is the second oldest building in Cardiff and dates from the 12th century. Highlights include the perpendicular tower and nave which were rebuilt after the original building was destroyed, two chapels dating from the 16th and 20th century, as well as the magnificent organ.

9. Cardiff Story Museum

The Cardiff Story Museum focuses on the history of Cardiff from the 1300s to the present day. There are permanent and temporary exhibitions to explore. There are interactive displays, photographs and objects that will have children and adults learning something new during their visit. Young kids can also dress up in costumes and handle old objects in a designated area, ensuring that even the littlest family members have a great day out.
