Peaceful; idyll; space to roam Recommends site
Large Tent - Large Wild Camping Pitches (Family) Jul 2025 What a gorgeous campsite. We had so much space in our large-tent private site, which was ringed by a mix of trees and some woven wood fencing. Since moving to the UK, I'd been missing having a campfire, so the fire ring was perfect.
The former slate quarry lake was the highlight of the place, with clear water & freely available lifejackets and small craft plus a solid dock. Our kids woke up every morning excited to take a "nature walk" where we'd say hello to the resident wandering peacocks, chickens, and dozens of bunnies.
The café is fantastic with a daily small selection of meals that are advertised around the site. I highly recommend going for a private campsite like we did, but the teepees have plenty of room too. But just as important is the nature of the crowd the campground attracts - there was no swearing, fighting, or any of the stuff that seems to go on at the more mainstream holiday parks.
We'll be back next year!
The kids didn't love the compost toilets, but I had far worse latrines at summer camp growing up, and it's a good solution for the rural site.

Gorgeous campsite is what we love to hear! Thank you so much for your lovely review; with so much detail and thought put into it which we hope will really tell other families what it's like here. We really appreciate you taking the time to explain everything and are so pleased you'll be coming back to us next year. Oh and we're constantly trying to improve the loos so watch this space...!
Great camping Recommends site
Small Tent - Large Wild Camping Pitches Sep 2024 Well, we were challenged by the weather.
Great service and welcome from the staff. Food was great at the kitchen. Showers and toilets were fine but not of a high standard.
Site's response
Thanks so much for your nice review and delighted you had a good time despite the weather.
Absolutely wonderful stay Recommends site
Large Tent - Grass Tent Pitches (Meadow) Aug 2024 22 acres of rustic and rural camping which was perfect for us. If wild camping is your thing then this is the place. Facilities are basic with compostable toilets and solar showers but it all adds to the rural experience!
There is a meadow for pitching or for a more secluded camp there are plenty of little private pitches all tucked away in the woodland.
The staff were fantastic and on arrival helped us out and showed us around.
The lake is stunning and there were plenty of families with children. As a couple, we wanted our own space and quiet which was lovely in our little spot under the trees.
Lots of wildlife and animals scurrying around. Not far from Port Isaac, Tintagel and Boscastle. If you love the outdoors and bit more of a wild camping experience then this is the place. We will definitely stay again.
Site's response
Thank you so very much for your top rating 5 out of 5 - we also really appreciate your detailed description of the campsite and it's location & amenities - but we just wanted to say there are flushing loo blocks and regular showers too!
We are indeed really close to the lovely fishing village of Port Isaac, famous beauty spots Tintagel (with it's historic castle) & Boscastle, plus premier surfing beach Polzeath, with Daymer Bay, Rock & Padstow (think cycle trails & Rick Stein's fish & chips!) all nearby too.
We'll really look forward to seeing your family here again!
Great time Recommends site
Medium Tent - Large Wild Camping Pitches Aug 2024 Me and my best friend spent the weekend in a wild camping area (Sky 8).
Upon arriving we met a gentleman named Tom who was very friendly and made us laugh which was lovely, he showed us a map of the area where we could go etc which was handy. He was always there when you needed him which is a great asset.
We got comfortable in our tent then explored to the cafe which we found out served the most amazing half baked cheesecake, pizza and baked potatoes. The ladies and men who work there were very lovely and very sweet.
We will definitely be going back as its a nice quiet getaway and I would highly recommend anyone must visit.
If you want to go with children, I'd recommend booking a Tipi as they're bigger. We will be booking again soon. Thank you.
Site's response
Thanks so much for your lovely 5 out of 5 rating and so glad you had such a lovely trip! Great that you so enjoyed the food at the cafe and we'll pass on your kind comments to Tom who will be delighted. See you again soon!
Nice stay in the green Recommends site
Medium Tent - Large Wild Camping Pitches (Family) Aug 2024 Loved the stay, just make the compost toilets as you should. Like, it works now (number 1 & 2 in a IBC-container) but has nothing to do with the functioning of a compost toilet.
Sadly, it means a bad first experience for a lot of people, while it really can work without nasty odours.
Site's response
We're so glad you enjoyed your stay and thanks for saying so!
We're a tiny bit confused about your composting comments as these are dedicated units complete with urine separator (sorry if too much information everybody!) which can be a bit problematic with lots of kids around.
It's when they're not used correctly that the odours occur...but there are always the flushing units just a minute or two's walk away if you choose.

Small Tent - Grass Tent Pitches (Meadow) Jul 2024 We had a lovely stay! Our wild camping area wasn't overcrowded, it was peaceful and relaxing.
All campers were quiet and respectful. The cafe food was really nice, the staff friendly and helpful, and the gorgeous lake was so enjoyable, especially enjoyed the boats. The toilets and showers weren't overcrowded and showers lovely and warm. We enjoyed seeing all the wildlife around the site.
We made so many fun and happy memories and will definitely recommend and be back next summer! Thank you :)

Thank you so much for your really lovely and thoughtful review - we really appreciate and look forward to seeing you again next summer!
Pretty, but overpriced Recommends site
Medium Tent - Large Wild Camping Pitches (Family) Jul 2024 The campsite is well located within a beautiful part of Cornwall, so days out to wonderful beaches, pretty villages/towns and good walking are easy.
The campsite itself is advertised as back to basics, wild camping. Which it is! The woodland site is very pretty and the lake in the old quarry, with rowing boats and the option to fish, is lovely. But the washroom, toilet and washing up facilities are tired and, when it's busy, there aren't enough of them.
Site staff are friendly and helpful. During our stay, the site was very noisy - which isn't the fault of the campsite, it just impacted on our enjoyment of the site. We were expecting a more peaceful stay.
We paid a lot of money to stay at this site! But, it's Cornwall in the summer and you can argue that almost everything is overpriced. I just don't think the site and facilities justified the high price tag.
Overall, a nice stay. Just expensive.
Site's response
Thanks for your feedback and we're so glad you thought our site was pretty and you enjoyed the lake with its boats and fishing etc. There are lots more loo & showers dotted around the campsite if the ones closest to you were too busy (all shown on the map we give you on arrival). Some of the loo blocks are older than the others and we do intend to build another new one this winter which we hope campers will like! Our price does reflect things like the woodland areas, boating & fishing which are all included & the ability to have campfires etc - things that are not available at most campsites. Our friendly staff are more plentiful than at most campsites because we think it improves the visitor experience - but this also has to be reflected in the price. There are cheaper campsites out there but what they offer will be more limited.
Lovely site Recommends site

VW-Type Campervan - Grass Campervan Pitches (Meadow) Aug 2023 Magical place with lots of quiet spaces and a beautiful lake for swimming in or taking a boat out. The cafe's good, was delicious and staff were friendly and helpful.

Lovely campsite Recommends site
Tipi or Wigwam - Medium Tipis (Village Field) Aug 2023 Lovely, tranquil campsite, with a beautiful lake and chickens and rabbits running around everywhere.
The lake is absolutely stunning. Facilities are kept very clean and staff are lovely and helpful. Hot water was a bit hit and miss but the staff are quick to sort out any issues. Could do with one or two more showers.
Teepee was very spacious and well equipped. We had a great time!
Site's response
Thank you, Tanya. Glad you enjoyed your stay with us and appreciated the lake & chickens! Sometimes the pilot light on the showers goes out, especially if its windy. We have plans to build another shower block - hopefully they will be ready for next season.
Budget facility, luxury price Medium Tent - Grass Tent Pitches (Meadow) Aug 2023 Basic facilities but overprized for tent sites. Budget facilities for high price. The atmosphere was nice.
Site's response
We're so pleased you liked the atmosphere but sorry you felt your stay didn't represent good value for money.
We hope that all the things we include in our camping fees give travellers lots of bang for their buck (or pound or euro!) These include swimming in our beautiful freshwater lake, fishing for delicious rainbow trout, use of the boats & kayaks, the option to have campfires every night (complete with stargazing & meteor showers this year!) and woodland to wander in - all 5 minutes from our wild Atlantic coast.
We appreciate our style of campsite isn't for everybody and are very sorry if it wasn't totally to your liking.
Wonderful place!!! Recommends site
Sprinter-Type Campervan - Grass Campervan Pitches (Meadow) Jul 2023 The site is simple, but wonderfully situated in the middle of a forest with a lake. There you can rent boats or go swimming. We especially liked the peace and quiet on the site!!!
Site's response
Many thanks for your lovely review, Sonja and hope you can come back again! Just to say the boats are included in your price - you can swim, boat or fish as you like.
