Saunter over to Hardwick Country Park and you'll find a shimmering lake, lush woodland and a chance to spot plenty of scampering wildlife. And then when it's time to refuel, there's a gift shop full of knick knacks and a nice cafe. If you feel like dining al fresco, you can light up a BBQ in the country park and there are picnic areas too.

On the first Sunday of the month the village has a farmer's market (that'll be where the tasty bites for the BBQ come from), and you can do a little time travelling at the local medieval fayre each May. Don't forget to wet your whistle at the local beer fest in the summer or stick around for the folk celebration in the cooler days of September.

Bargain hunters will have a good rummage at the Sedgefield Racecourse, where every Thursday and Sunday there is a large car boot sale.
