About the site
At the foot of the Howgill Fells in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this site is perfect for a relaxed camping or glamping holiday for couples, families or friends. This beautiful, quiet, unspoiled area is ideal for exploring both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District - but with none of their hustle and bustle.
Large areas of grass in the centre of the camping field are kept long as a meadow for wildlife (and for children to roll about in!), and there is a programme of planting native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers. The owners are proud to have a Silver Award from the Green Tourism Scheme.
Large pitches for tents and three campervan pitches are positioned around the central meadow, leaving plenty of room for everyone to enjoy in peace. The site is justly proud that many visitors return year after year or several times a year.
After a day out exploring, return home to a peaceful campsite to watch the sunset and enjoy life's simple pleasures while swallows swoop across the meadow. The friendly sheep are very happy to be fed bits of bread and will come trotting over when they see you. If you're lucky, you'll see a red squirrel popping along the drystone walls.
Wander down to one of the two village pubs or light your campfire, toast your marshmallows and wait for the stars to come out in an inky black sky. The campsite is in an International Dark Skies Reserve and is a Dark Sky Business.
There are two options for glampers - Far Field Yurt for couples or families, and Green Bell Tent for couples only. Both offer the chance to relax in peace, comfort and privacy while surrounded by nature! What could be better?
The yurt and bell tent are in a separate field framed by a little woodland behind and a meadow with gorgeous views in front. They are separated by a block of trees. Each has its own fully equipped kitchen (including cool box with ice blocks provided) and bijou private composting toilet.
They also have their own private garden areas with a campfire and BBQ, lovely double hammock (great for stargazing!), picnic table and seating. All glamping is off-grid with solar powered lighting and phone charging.
Far Field Yurt is fully insulated and beautifully equipped for couples or families. Inside is light and spacious, with large windows and a clear central roof dome for stargazing. Furnished with a wood burning stove to keep you toasty warm, handmade and vintage furniture, and comfy modern beds.
The yurt's kitchen hut is equipped to cook proper meals for up to five people. It has a fully made-up double bed. Pillows and a bottom sheet are provided for up to three single beds. A cot is available on request.
Like the yurt, Green Bell Tent is spacious, comfy, and very private with its own kitchen and garden. It has a fully made up comfy double bed, carpet and cosy furnishings.

A note from the site themselves...
We have lived at Low Greenside for over 40 years. Magnus is a third generation camper and the second generation to run the campsite, and he really loves doing it. We get the nicest people coming to stay - quietly sociable and considerate of fellow campers - and they make it a delight. We love this place and this area and we want you to love it too!
Ever since it began about 20 years ago, the campsite strap line has been 'Camping as it used to be'. We believe in keeping things simple while providing all the essentials of comfortable camping to the highest standard. Otherwise, the camping field and glamping are kept free of virtually anything but grass, trees, wildflowers, birds, and passing wildlife.
This leaves you free to enjoy proper, peaceful camping with uninterrupted views in the daytime and dark starry skies and a campfire at night - Camping as it used to be. It's what we like ourselves and it seems to appeal to really nice and well behaved people. Win win!
We think it's important for businesses to do their bit in the world and so we're very proud to have achieved a Silver Award for Green Tourism. The Award highlights how we take care of and enhance the natural environment by creating better spaces for nature to flourish, how we reduce our impact on the climate, and how we support local businesses and ethical suppliers.
We also produce a booklet of 'Nine Great Walks' from the campsite to help you enjoy our lovely countryside on foot. Proceeds from this go to support Tiyeni, a charity in Malawi that helps subsistence farmers to increase food production and soil health through sustainable organic farming.

Large Tent - Non Electric Extra Large Grass Tent PitchesMay 2025
We had a lovely stay here. The campsite has great views and is very picturesque. No cars are allowed on the field, so wheelbarrows are provided for carrying your things.
Each pitch has a fire pit which is great. The toilets, showers and washing up facilities were great, lovely and modern and clean - no matter what time we used them.
There were good recycling options which was good to see and helped reduce our waste. There are lots of lovely walks nearby and we found a short walk through fields to the village where there are two lovely pubs.
Great site, we would stay again.

Medium Tent - Non Electric Extra Large Grass Tent PitchesMay 2025
Great site. Bins were full and had not been emptied while we were there.
Some campers near us were noisy at around 20.00 'til 23.00. And one camper was playing his music all day and into the evening.
Site's response
Many thanks for your review, Paul.
We're pleased you liked the campsite and recommend it, thank you, but I'm very sorry if you were troubled by noise we didn't notice. Please do let us know if you find anything amiss here, especially noise. We're very grateful to be told about anything that's escaped our attention and happy to sort it out at once.
It was a busy Bank Holiday weekend and the bins did fill up quickly a number of times so I'm guessing this gave the impression they hadn't been emptied. I hope you weren't inconvenienced and please accept our apologies if so.
Hope to see you again sometime.
Lovely peaceful stay

Things to do on site and in the Kirkby Stephen area
There's plenty to see and do in this lovely corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with pretty villages and interesting market towns to explore, lots of nice little shops and cafes with friendly people running them. You'll find the roads quiet, no parking problems, and walking very peaceful.
The campsite offers a useful walking guide - Nine Great Walks from Low Greenside (£3). Smardale Ghyll Nature Reserve is a great walk from the farm, crossing a big old railway viaduct - see massive lime kilns, lots of wildflowers and rare butterflies. Boweberhead Nature Reserve with its beautiful upland hay meadows and re-wiggled beck is another popular route.
There's a lovely, informal, and inexpensive 9/18 hole golf course (clubs available free of charge at the campsite), a public tennis court (bring racquets), a children's playground, an interesting church with monastic ruins, and an art gallery with coffee and homemade cakes. Catch a vintage bus from the village to visit Kendal or Barnard Castle on weekly market days.
Nearby is Bessy Beck Trout Farm where you can fish - catch one and BBQ it on your campfire!
In Kirkby Stephen (10 minutes), you can shop locally for everything you're likely to need. There are lots of cafes and small shops to explore. Visit the little railway museum free of charge and ride on a steam train.
The Eden Valley is lovely to explore, with quiet roads, pretty villages, small attractions, and unspoiled and varied countryside. Appleby and Sedbergh are both nearby and worth visiting. Far Field Mill Arts and Heritage Centre near Sedbergh is a place to stop for tea on a return trip from Hawes where there is lots to see and do.
