Aerial of Birchbank Camping Site grass pitches

Birchbank is a small campsite on a Lake District sheep farm, located on the fells between Coniston Water and the Duddon Estuary. The site has a small stream running through it, which the children love to play in with footpaths and bridleways directly from the gate, making it ideal for walking and cycling. There are just 24 grass pitches, some available with a 10 amp electric hook up. Windermere is also within 25 minutes!

Large Tent - Electric Grass PitchesAug 2026

Lovely campsite, very remote but has all the essentials needed such as toilets, showers and wash up area. The amenities were very clean and were cleaned regularly. It was such a peaceful stay with plenty of walks straight from the camp site.

Large Tent - Electric Grass PitchesAug 2026

The setting of this campsite is just beautiful. There is no road noise or light pollution; the only noise is that of the sheep! The campsite has everything you need, although the showers and toilets are fairly basic- but they are cleaned several times a day and there is always plenty of loo roll and hand towels. There's almost no mobile signal so may not be great for teenagers- although I welcomed the break from my phone pinging every five minutes! Very good value for money. The hosts don't bother you or give you a list of rules like some campsites do. Very relaxed And an ideal spot for just chilling! I would stay here again.

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesAug 2026

We stayed just for 2 nights, plenty of space for all on site, no pushy owners saying where to pitch up, which is a lovely touch. The owners were very friendly when we spoke to them and to say how busy the site was, maybe 30 tents, the showers and toilet facilities were well maintained and never messy. A very peaceful location. The only downside, we didn't stay longer!

We loved this campsite. It had everything we needed which isn't much! We especially loved the walk to Beacon Tarn and being surrounded by beautiful countryside. If you're looking for a quiet rural campsite and you love walking and the lake district I'd highly recommend this site to you

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesJul 2026

Lovely small quiet site with lovely views across the fells. Facilities were nothing fancy but very functional and clean - having access to washer, drier and fridge/freezer was fantastic and the showers were electric so were wonderful. I like the family bathroom cubicle too which gives families/people who need a bit more space room to shower/toilet - ideal for trying to get children showered without ending up drenched in a tiny cubicle!

Large Tent - Electric Grass PitchesJul 2026

This is a lovely campsite, it's a little off the track so it is very isolated. The facilities are clean and the showers are lovely. The pitches are nice and flat too. It's a working farm, so there is some animal noises, but that never bothered us. No complaints about the site at all.

Nice and quiet little campsite

Large Tent - Electric Grass PitchesJul 2026

My wife and I with our 5 young children camped here for 6 nights, along with my brother and his family. We really enjoyed it. It was quite windy for the first few nights and rained a good bit. Not the fault of the campsite, but it's located in the hills which perhaps was why it was more windy than elsewhere when out and about. Off the beaten track a bit and very limited phone signal (which was a positive for multiple reasons). Host was very nice and helpful and the site is well maintained. Facilities are basic, but includes what is needed - toilets, showers, dish wash area. Not too far from the lakes or main towns with shops and other facilities. We were out on a lake a couple of days which was excellent. No issues with bugs or wildlife for us. It is a working farm and there were some animals around, mostly sheep, that were a little noisy at times but not enough to impact us in anyway, including our sleep. We would go again, but would hope for better weather! It's a roll of the dice in lake district though.

Large Tent - Electric Grass PitchesJul 2026

We have just returned from an amazing week on this lovely campsite. The view is spectacular to wake up to and the walks around the campsite are suitable even for shorter walks. There are sheep all over, so it's definitely a nice country walk. You're on a working farm, so there's lots of animal noise but that gave the farm its special charm. You have chickens walking around the main house area and the sheep are always first up and last down. The hosts are super friendly and very helpful. Facilities are basic but cleaned twice a day and the showers are nice and hot. The washing machine and tumble dryer came in handy too. Short drive for hiking, paddle boarding, boat hire and many little villages to explore. Wi-Fi and signal isn't great but we made do. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will definitely stay here again. Roads in and out and surrounding areas are a little narrow but that's the country site for you. Ulverston was great for shopping.

Large Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesJul 2026

This was my first time camping after buying a tent and some camping gear. Me and my partner loved this little campsite. The facilities, although basic, were very functional and clean. You really felt cut off from the hustle and bustle of modern life staying here. Beautiful surrounding countryside, friendly owners and fellow campers. Perfect for exploring Coniston and Windermere areas, with the benefit to retreating to this tranquil setting in the evening. There was a lovely cafe/brunch place at Greenodd called Bakehouse born and bread (15 min drive) - would thoroughly recommend the cinnamon buns. Remember to take essentials, as nearest shops are a 15/20 min drive. Would definitely come back.
