Nice site attached to the ear of a traditional village pub. Recommends site
Sprinter-Type Campervan - Electric Grass Pitches May 2026 Nice site attached to the ear of a traditional village pub. The toilet & shower block was being renovated so the pub toilets stayed open for the duration of our stay but there was only 1 shower for the entire site available
Lovely stay Recommends site
Large Tent - Non Electric Grass Pitches May 2026 Staff were absolutely lovely, and facilities were great. Campsite was in a good area quiet but not too far from anything.
Disappointed Sprinter-Type Campervan - Electric Grass Pitches May 2026 Disappointing. This was our 4th visit to The Gate Hangs High and sadly, it will be our last.
What used to be a lovely, spacious, welcoming site we genuinely looked forward to visiting has now become, in our opinion overcrowded and a real health and safety concern.
We had booked an EHU pitch and arrived early Sunday afternoon, only to find there were no clearly marked pitches and vans were packed on top of each other. There was nowhere near the recommended spacing between units — certainly not 6 metres between pitches or even 3 metres between extended equipment and neighbouring vans.
We were allocated a spot on the side of a verge next to the gate for the beer garden, which meant constant gate slamming throughout our stay. To make matters worse, our van was hit three times by children playing football nearby. We didn't have enough room to pull out our awning for cooking and sitting to enjoy the glorious weather.
When we went into the pub, there was no food available and nowhere to sit for a drink because it was bingo night and every table had been reserved.
Even with levellers, the pitch was extremely uneven, meaning we couldn't use our shower and ended up sleeping on a downhill slope. The site toilet and shower facilities were very basic, one shower and 2 toilets to share with the pub. Rubbish bins in the field overflowing with food and empty bottles.
The site felt completely overbooked, with as many vans and tents as possible being crammed in, including late arrivals without prior bookings which only made things worse.
We decided to leave early, frustrated to find late arrivals had effectively blocked us in overnight. To be fair, the new landlord has clearly invested money into improvements to the pub and site, but unfortunately, the experience has been spoiled by overcrowding and trying to squeeze too many people in.
If you're wanting a quiet, relaxed site this isn't the place to book. Fantastic for families with young children or large groups.

Motorhome - Non Electric Grass Touring Pitches May 2026 Lovely little stopover for the motorhome. The pub was really welcoming and a young man showed us to our pitch and explained where everything was, which was really helpful.
Perfect for a one night stay and really handy for Hook Norton Brewery, which is about a 30 minute walk down the road. Nice atmosphere, easy stopover and we’d definitely stay again.
Really great hospitality great pub and great food Recommends site
VW-Type Campervan - Non Electric Grass Pitches May 2026 Lovely friendly staff and atmosphere...
Back soon
Lovely site and very friendly staff they couldn’t do enough, the pub onsite was great and the food was beautiful, would definitely recommend Recommends site
Motorhome - Non Electric Grass Touring Pitches May 2026 Excellent site, value for money and very friendly staff, would definitely recommend to family and friends,
Good, not top Recommends site
Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass Pitches May 2026 Two families with four children under 8 and we had a great time.
That said, having only one bathroom with a shower for the whole campsite is really not enough, especially during busy times, although the pub keeps its toilets open and that helps a little. Also, the layout of the tents feels a bit chaotic and offers little privacy.
Overall though, it was a very good experience, especially for families with children.
Short break Recommends site
VW-Type Campervan - Electric Grass Pitches May 2026 Lovely pub and grounds, would benefit from more than 1 toilet and shower but it didn't cause an issue as it was very quiet. Lovely staff and would recommend to others.

VW-Type Campervan - Non Electric Grass Pitches May 2026 great fun and a big hello to the cattle
Great spot Recommends site
Motorhome - Electric Grass Pitches May 2026 Updating facilities but weren't made aware. Pitches not clearly marked out. The person behind us was plugged into the electric but hadn't booked an electric pitch. No one is overseeing what happens.
Shower room was filthy and toilets not open as being refurbished. Pub lovely and food really nice.
Would be good to go back once it's all up and running normally.
Great pub campsite Recommends site
Motorhome - Electric Grass Pitches May 2026 Basic campsite next to a fabulous pub. Great for get togethers & we all managed to camp in the same area of the campsite.
Food in the pub was very good (Sunday roast & snacks from the outside menu) & the staff were great & very friendly. The campsite itself is nice but the facilities are very limited. No washing up facilities & the lock on the campsite toilet was broken which was a bit annoying as people kept walking in on you! We were told new facilities are being built soon which will make it much better.
Walk into Hook Norton was well worth it. Nice pub & a brewery. We will come again next year.
Great very nice site Recommends site
Single Axle Caravan - Electric Grass Pitches Apr 2026 Great very nice we will book again with friends
Fantastic site! Recommends site
VW-Type Campervan - Electric Grass Pitches Apr 2026 The site is amazing, and very large, situated behind the pub (even better!), and the beer garden is fantastic, great children’s play area, and it’s all securely fenced off so little ones can’t escape!
We had dinner in the pub and the food and service was brilliant & great value for money too.. highly recommend.
Nice level pitches and a HUGE hard standing area too,
Very neat, tidy and clean site
Bar/restaurant staff are extremely helpful and friendly
A walk to the Hook Norton brewery is a must!
It won’t be long before we go back!
Wonderful stay Recommends site
Small Tent - Electric Grass Pitches Apr 2026 This was our first time camping so we had a little trepidation. The st ff couldn’t have been more helpful, the pitch was lovely and we watched the sun go down over the hills before having a lovely meal at the pub. The night was quiet, just the owls for company, it was a truly magical stay.
Great little spot Recommends site
Medium Tent - Electric Grass Pitches Apr 2026 On arrival we went into the pub to check in, a lovely lady showed us around and pointed out where everything was.
Great size pitches. 2 toilets and 1 shower but apparently there are plans to add more this summer. No disturbance from the work site behind. Great pub garden. Surrounded by fences and trees which would help if it was windy.
I didn't see a washing up area, I took a collapsible washing up bowl so wasn't an issue for us.
Overall, a great stay.
Noisy and isolated Motorhome - Non Electric Grass Touring Pitches Apr 2026 Campsite very uneven, noisy heavy plant machinery next door all day long from 7.30am! Pub was dog friendly, but nowhere to walk your dog, no pavements you have to walk on the roads, nothing close by at all.
Felt like you can't have a private conversation without getting asked to leave the pub, food was ok, but would not recommend and certainly would never return there again.
2 night stay Single Axle Caravan - Electric Grass Pitches Apr 2026 This is a lovely site and the staff are very friendly and welcoming.
Good for getting into the Cotswolds. On the downside, there's some kind of recycling ♻️ place next door and there's loads of dust coming over the fence, that's why I would not recommend it.
They are also going to be upgrading the showers and toilets, so it will be a lovely site once complete but the recycling next door is what would put me off, sadly. They had a car show on Tuesday evening that was interesting and they will be doing that every 2nd Tuesday of the month.
Great first outing Recommends site
Roof Tent - Non Electric Grass Pitches Apr 2026 First outing in our new roof tent, had a good stay here; nice little place and well equipped. Nice having a pub on site for food and drinks.
Field is on a bit of a steep gradient so it took some time to find the right spot to pitch up so bare that in mind.
Toilet and shower blocks had plenty of toiletries available but the shower was a bit unclean, I didn't avail myself of it as a result but only stayed the one night so wasn't overly necessary.
Overall, a pleasant stay despite incredible wind.
Family short break, perfection. Recommends site
Single Axle Caravan - Electric Grass Pitches Apr 2026 What a fantastic gem! Lovely historic pub with great food and service, with a beautiful campsite and a kids play area in the pub garden. Located on the edge of the Cotswolds near so many visitor attractions, but far enough away to be secluded. In our opinion, a perfect balance.
Friendly and relaxed but limited Recommends site
VW-Type Campervan - Non Electric Grass Pitches Apr 2026 A very relaxed and peaceful site behind the pub.
However, facilities seem quite limited. Only two toilets and one of those (which was out the front of the pub) had the shower in so could be occupied for long stints. It was fairly quiet when we were there (others maybe didn't fancy the storm and frost?) and even so we sometimes had to wait for a toilet - seems like it might be worse if the site was busy.
We couldn't find the washing up facilities, despite description. Quite a sloped site. All this made the price feel quite steep (£20 a night without electric) - the basic facilities would have seemed more reasonable at a lower price.
All that said, it was a lovely location, and friendly staff in the pub, plus good dark skies for stargazing. With the addition of a proper toilet / shower / washing up block, this would be an excellent site. As it is, alright for a night or two.

Single Axle Caravan - Electric Grass Pitches Apr 2026 Great place. Great hosts. We will be back 😂
Disappointing stay due to constant noise VW-Type Campervan - Non Electric Grass Pitches Apr 2026 We came for Easter weekend and stayed on a Thursday night, but unfortunately our experience was very disappointing.
We were woken up by building noise at 7:30am. We then went for breakfast at 9am away from the site. When we returned at 1pm hoping to have a nap, the place was still extremely noisy due to ongoing construction work.
We ended up leaving early as it was completely unacceptable. It’s unreasonable to carry out this level of building work during a busy holiday weekend when guests are coming to relax and enjoy peace and quiet in nature. Instead, it felt like being on a construction site.
We understand that maintenance needs to be done, but this should have been scheduled at a more appropriate time, not during a peak period when people are trying to escape and unwind.
Very disappointed with the experience.
Great weekend Recommends site
Extra Large Tent - Non Electric Grass Pitches Mar 2026 It was a great weekend, loved the location and the friendly staff. They are very much dog friendly and we are planning to revisit again soon.
Friendly, welcoming pub with camping field Recommends site
Sprinter-Type Campervan - Electric Grass Pitches Mar 2026 Lovely, helpful friendly staff, who warmly welcomed us to the site. They spoke passionately about plans to further develop the camping facilities. There is now a hardstanding area with electric hook ups to maximise all seasons.
Camping plus access to toilet and shower facilities for campers.
Easy access to beautiful locations in the Oxfordshire countryside. Would highly recommend.
Lovely stay Recommends site
VW-Type Campervan - Electric Grass Pitches Mar 2026 We had a lovely stay here. Very clean, quite basic, but that's all we needed, the pub was excellent.
It was quite chilly, but we were welcomed with a roaring open fire! We had booked a table for dinner and we were warmly greeted by all the staff, who made us feel very welcome. The staff were lovely, really friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent, really well presented, hot and very tasty.
Would visit again, thank you.
