About the site

Expect a warm and friendly welcome at this family-run site. Set amongst scenic countryside, the site is well located with easy access to the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, with Southwold, Dunwich Beach and Thorpeness within a 30 minute drive. The 45 grass pitches are flat and spacious, with areas separated by hedgerow plants and trees. Each of the grass pitches measures a spacious 11m x 11m, allowing up to six guests in tents, trailer tents, caravans, campervans and motorhomes. There are also 14 pitches with a 6 amp hook up and two electric vehicle chargers. If glamping is more your style, the site offers two options. The camping pod sleeps up to five, kitted with a double, single, small double sofa bed and a chest of drawers. The pre-erected Canvas Caban tent accommodates up to four with two separate bedroom compartments, each featuring a double mattress on a low wooden base. The glamping units are set on private pitches with an outside scout-style tent complete with a camper's kitchen, cooker, equipment and a table and chairs. Please note that the glamping units do not include bedding, and shared bathroom facilities are nearby. A designated field has space for children to play football, fly kites and run around. There is also a well equipped play area with a swing, an adventure trail and a wooden tractor. If the weather turns, a big barn houses table football and table tennis tables with Duplo and Brio for the younger ones. Friday BBQ night has proven to be very popular. For this, you need to prebook, but definitely worth it! You can also pick up croissants and pain au chocolat every morning, with cooked breakfast rolls on a Sunday. Four-legged friends can also join you for your stay with 'Percy's Paddock', an enclosed area where they can be let off the lead. Up to two are allowed per pitch and in the glamping units. To complete your camping experience, fire pits are available for rent, and wood is available for purchase. BBQs are also welcome, and there are blocks to borrow as you will need to ensure they do not scorch the grass.

The Croft Campsite is open from 27/03 to 27/09. Pitches from £29/night for 2 people.

We stayed in September for the festival and some sightseeing. It was our 2nd stay at the site and everything was as lovely as we remembered. It's a well maintained site and the toilets are cleaned on a regular basis and are always clean and tidy (and there are plenty of them). Maria and Guy are always available and can't do enough for you. It's a fab location for travelling around Suffolk (lots of leaflets in the office) and there a small co-op nearby and larger shops a few miles away. It's well worth booking for the Friday evening BBQ, there plenty of choice and lots of it! It is also a great opportunity to meet the other campers. The pastries and Sunday breakfast rolls are a great addition too. We'll definitely be back!

Large Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesAug 2025

This was our first ever camping experience and we must say we picked the perfect campsite. From the moment we got there the staff were very helpful. The pitches are a really good size, the facilities were very good and clean. We forgot our pump for the air beds and they did all they could to help us and then the following night again they helped us when we had ran out of kindling and firefighters. We will definitely be re booking.

Site's response

We are so pleased you first camping experience was a sucess and hope that it was a first of many. Maria and Guy

A note from the site themselves...

I'm Maria, a former paediatric nurse and my husband, Guy, is a retired teacher. Our kids, Jake and Ella, have flown the nest, settling in Hull and London. Back in 2001, we moved to Alexandria, Egypt. Living there for a fantastic but unplanned 12 years! While Guy was teaching, I oversaw the building of two holiday villas and successfully rented them out.

During the summer holidays, we would explore the UK in our trusty campervan. Returning home in 2013, the idea struck, why not run a campsite? After a year of plotting, we found The Croft, securing it after some twists and turns. Fast forward, and our campsite dream is alive with its sprawling land, charming outbuildings, and spot-on location.

We have really tried to put together all the elements that were important to us when staying on a campsite, whether short or long. We both hope to welcome you soon!

Things to do on site and in the Ubbeston area

Suffolk is a lesser-known treasure, boasting lovely beaches, picturesque rivers, villages and uncrowded roads. To top it all, the county has the lowest rainfall in the UK, which must be a plus when you are camping!

Framlingham (15 minutes) is one of the prettiest towns around, with its castle overlooking a mere (lake). The castle is great to visit for both children and adults alike, and it also has a market every Tuesday and Saturday.

Southwold (30 minutes) is a traditional seaside town with its pier and brightly coloured beach huts. The 'Under the Pier Show' is a must-visit attraction which will make you laugh out loud. Take a few pound coins with you to 'wack the banker' and enjoy the other totally wacky hand-built machines!

Cove Hythe, a 30 minute drive away, is a favourite beach and remains uncrowded. It is a ten minute walk from where you park your car.

Snape Maltings (25 minutes) is situated on the River Alde, offering walking trails and river trips. The Maltings is the home of the world famous Concert Hall, run by Aldeburgh Music. An eclectic mix of music to suit all tastes can be heard here in the spectacular building. The Maltings also has many art exhibitions, craft shops, and cafes.

Halesworth (15 minutes) is the nearest town. It's a beautiful drive from the campsite going past Heveningham Hall. Halesworth town is centred around a pedestrianised shopping area where many buildings date back to the 16th century. It has the largest Millennium Green in the UK. 44 acres of marshland and flood plain converted for the enjoyment of locals and visitors. Halesworth is also on the National Cycle Route 1.

Other local attractions include:

  • Shawsgate Vineyard (10 minutes)
  • Oasis Camel Centre (15 minutes)
  • Easton Farm Park (20 minutes)
  • Southwold Maize Maze (25 minutes)
  • Sutton Hoo (35 minutes)
