About the site

Nestled between the market towns of Banbury and Chipping Norton, this pub campsite offers a back-to-basics base for exploring the Cotswolds. The site is within easy reach of local villages, farm shops and walking trails. There are a total of 25 tent and campervan pitches, and 12 touring pitches, each unallocated without electric and suitable for up to six guests. If you want to hook up your appliances, six electric pitches are set in an open field, for tents, campervans, caravans and motorhomes, allowing up to six guests per pitch. Enjoy a meal in the pub, or a well-deserved pint, after taking a walk down to Hook Norton Brewery, a 30 minute stroll away. Or have a BBQ or toast marshmallows over a fire pit, as long as it is raised from the ground. Four-legged friends are welcome to join you for your stay, with up to two dogs allowed per pitch. Do note that restaurant booking is a must to be guaranteed a table, and the pub does not serve food on Mondays or Tuesdays. The site also hosts a range of events and live music bands in the pub garden and field, and there is an industrial site next door, which can be noisy in the mornings.

The Gate Hangs High is open from 01/03 to 31/12 in 2025 and 2026.

VW-Type Campervan - Non Electric Grass PitchesSep 2025

The camping field had hardstanding at the top near the pub with hook ups for vans. We pitched at the bottom of the field on a flattish spot, the only boundary with a hedge and fields behind it and the quietest place. There are 2 toilets for 24 hour access on the outside of the pub, one of which contains the shower, the other is small and contains a loo and small corner basin with no plug. The water was hot, there was soap, air freshener, enough loo paper and a hand dryer. Cleanliness was ok. The toilets in the pub were available during opening hours. The pub was clean and served locally brewed beer. The food was ok, but not cheap, the menu item I chose was unavailable. There were some beautiful prints on the wall from local artist Josephine Trotter, which I thought was a great touch. Dogs are allowed too. Hook Norton village is under a mile away. The village is picturesque. Saint Peter's church is really interesting and has some beautiful stone carvings and stained glass. The Sun pub opposite the church served Hook Norton beer and also allowed dogs. Overall, I was happy with a one night stay at this site, but I wouldn't fancy a proper holiday there.

Small Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesSep 2025

This describes itself as a fairly basic site, but as such, it is excellent. The pitches are well mowed. The adjoining pub is great, with an excellent and well priced menu. Super friendly staff. Only £8 pppn! It's nice that it offers the full range from campsite, to hook up, to hotel room. Definitely recommended.
