About the site

This camping and touring site is set in a secluded location for exploring the Lake District's Western Fells and lakes. The site has basic and simple facilities for those wanting a traditional camping holiday. There are non electric grass pitches for tents or campervans, as well as grass pitches with 16 amp electric hook up for tents, campers and touring caravans alike. Explore the nearby scenery, including the River Cocker and Lorton Valley. Campfires are not allowed, but firepits and BBQs are, as long as they're raised off the grass to avoid causing damage to the turf. Please ask for bricks. A maximum of three dogs is allowed per pitch, and there are a number of nearby trails for long dog walks.

Lovely location. Nice and quiet. Very simple facilities, no way to dry hands in toilets though. £25 per night feels a little steep for the simplicity, but it's been a while since I've used a campsite and remember prices being a lot less in the past. I was lucky to have 2 nights there alone so it was very peaceful and quiet. Would recommend if you want a relaxing time.

Small Tent - Non Electric Grass Tent PitchesSep 2025

On a lovely, single track road, this is a simple 'no frills' site. Accommodates tents and campervans: not sure if I'd tow a caravan though! Male and female toilets with free showers. Soap is also on the sinks. Washing-up room with Fairy Liquid provided too. There is a fridge (it might be a freezer - I didn't check). Electric shaver sockets and an outlet with 3-pin U.K. socket and 2x usb sockets for phone charging. Owner seems very helpful with signs offering assistance from charging phones to towing your vehicle! All-in-all, I loved the peace & quiet after a few days hiking up Low Fell & Fellbarrow, Rannerdale Knotts & Buttermere with my dog.

Things to do on site and in the Cockermouth area

The closest lakes are Crummock, Loweswater and Buttermere, all of which have perimeter walks. Fishing and boating permits can be obtained for all three.

Lorton Vale Trout Fishery is just a five minute drive away and Cockermouth Golf Club is also just 12 minutes up the road.

A 25 minute drive over Whinlatter pass takes you to Keswick, with restaurants and pubs, a theatre and plenty of walking and climbing shops. The Cumbrian coast is a little further, but there are some beaches, like St. Bees, just south of Whitehaven.
