About the site

Set on the edge of Galloway Forest Park and nestled between Woodhall Loch and Loch Ken, this quiet dark sky campsite is as close as you can get to wild camping without forgoing a hot shower. The site is off-grid and offers a selection of grass pitches, some unmarked without electric for free-pitching and others measuring a spacious 10m x 7m with electric hook up points, all suitable for tents and tourers. If you don't want the hassle of hammering in the tent pegs, you also have the option to book one of the heated glamping pods. The Bunk Bed glamping pod is great for a family of four with two bunk beds and two fold out beds. The Stargazer and Apex glamping pods sleep up to five with fold out beds. There is also a microwave, kettle, toaster, plus a fire pit outside. Please note, that all pods contain an electric meter which takes £1 and £2 coins and that all the pods are pet free apart from three of the Apex glamping pods. Bedding is not provided in any of the pods, so please bring your own. Shared facilities are just a short walk away. This wild, spacious site is perfect for adventurous friends, families, couples or solo travellers looking to reconnect with nature and explore all that Southern Scotland has to offer. You will be just 20 minutes from Castle Douglas and a 40 minute drive to Dumfries. Sit back and unwind against a backdrop of rolling hills and wildlife noises, or throw yourself into the onsite activities. Options include following the river walks that take you to RSPB private bird hides overlooking the Ken-Dee Marsh reserve, hiring kayaks, paddle boards or canoes, fishing in Woodhall Loch or cycling around Galloway Forest and finding hidden picnic spots. Thanks to the site's convenient location, you can reach a number of beautiful beaches within 30 minutes, such as Cardoness Beach. Exploring Kenmure Castle makes a great family day out, only ten minutes away. Four-legged friends are permitted on all camping and touring pitches, as well as in three of the Apex glamping pods. The other cabins do not allow dogs inside. Firepits are available to borrow on a first come first served basis, or bring your own! Perfect for nights spent gazing up at the starry night sky, so don't forget the marshmallows. Please note, that BBQs and fire pits must be raised from the ground to not cause any damage to the grass.

Medium Tent - Electric Grass PitchesJul 2025

It was an okay stay but no one was on site in case there was any problems. Facilities were good and clean but nothing special about the location and people were playing loud music all night long.

Site's response

Hi, Thank you for your review, I am slightly disappointed by the low score, however we are not everyone's cup of tea and respect your view. I am sorry you did not see us, my daughter and I were on and off the site at least a dozen times, cleaning the facilities, seeing if anyone wanted to hire paddles boards, selling logs and letting everyone know that we had left the life jackets at the boat house if they felt the need for a swim, as it was extremely warm, we tried to get around everyone to say hi, however you must have been away from your pitch. I am sorry that your experience on Hensol, wasn't as good as others, who have written some fantastic reviews the same weekend. I can only apologies for the inconsiderate behaviour of others who were being loud, we do operate a strict quiet period from 11pm to 8am, and encourage our guests to contact us if this has not be adhered to, we do come out and deal with it, we hate to hear that our guests don't get the full Hensol experience. Again, our apologies you weren't able to enjoy our Estate and love it as much as thousands of others have done, we feel truly lucky to be able to offer Hensol as a holiday destination, however, the rural country side with beautiful views of the Galloway Forest, UNESCO Dark Skies Park, copious amounts of Red Kites soaring above campsite all day long and roaming dear, along with miles of onsite walks, isn't everyone's cup of tea, which we appreciate, and hope you find your perfect pitch elsewhere. We wish you happy summer. Kind regards Michelle

VW-Type Campervan - Electric Grass and Gravel PitchesJul 2025

Beautiful site set in the countryside. Peaceful with remote feeling. Basic facilities but everything you need. No staff so just turn up and choose your own pitch. We saw deer on the site every day we were there. Stunning.

Site's response

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We like to keep ourselves hidden, like the roaming haggis, however we are about and just a phone call away if you ever need anything. I am glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to you coming back. Kind regards Michelle
