About the site

Enjoy camping under the dappled shade of an oak wood planted from acorns by the village school children in 1890! The site is ten minutes from Framlingham, and six acres of woodland are available for exploring and den building, with a grassy avenue for seasonal games. Every so often, you'll find something new. In the past, there has been a bale castle, and a mud kitchen next to the social space, so you can keep an eye on the little ones. You might spot a fallow or even a roe deer in the other half of the 11-acre wood, which is reserved for wildlife. And you might see a red kite flying majestically above. There are secluded woodland glades for private groups of up to three pitches, as well as a secluded woodland glade for a private group of up to four pitches. Each glade comes with a nightly firewood allowance and offers a fire-bowl, picnic table and standpipe. You'll be camping under dappled shade to prevent overheating. There's no power on the site, but if you book a glade, you can have one vehicle parked beside it for charging your devices. After you've unloaded, any other vehicles need to be parked in the farmyard car park. There are three individual pitches, for tents only, on a wide grassy avenue through the middle of the wood. If you choose one of these, you'll be near the shared space. So, if you prefer to cook your breakfast over a wood fire, you can use the fire bowls there, but you'll need to buy a bundle of firewood (the timber on the woodland floor is solely for insects and worms, not campfires). No vehicular access to the individual pitches over the grass - trolleys available to wheel gear from track 100m away. Please note, to stay at this site, guests must be a part of The Greener Camping Club. Acoustic instruments around the campfire are fine, but no amplified music, please. The aim is to live in harmony with the wildlife. Up to three dogs are welcome to join you, but only with a woodland glade booking.

A note from the site themselves...

We think the wood has a serene, timeless feeling. We wanted others to share that feeling, but we had to strike a balance between sharing something special and spoiling it. We settled on the idea of setting aside half of the wood for wildlife and placing most of the camping along the opposite edge of the wood.

The ancient trackway that runs alongside the wood helps to transport you back from the bustle of the present. It runs along a straight watershed and holds stories from before history started to be written down. In the time of King Rædwald, who was buried within his ship at nearby Sutton Hoo, the Anglo-Saxons used the track as a major boundary.

Centuries later, in 1553, Henry VIII's eldest daughter, Mary Tudor, used the track to march her army on London, to take the throne as the first Queen of England.

During your stay, do try to find a spot in the woods to quietly sit and let yourself drift through those slower times. That is what we wanted to share with you - space and time to linger, to ponder.
