About the site

This camping and touring site is set in a secluded location for exploring the Lake District's Western Fells and lakes. The site has basic and simple facilities for those wanting a traditional camping holiday. There are non electric grass pitches for tents or campervans, as well as grass pitches with 16 amp electric hook up for tents, campers and touring caravans alike. Explore the nearby scenery, including the River Cocker and Lorton Valley. Campfires are not allowed, but firepits and BBQs are, as long as they're raised off the grass to avoid causing damage to the turf. Please ask for bricks. A maximum of three dogs is allowed per pitch, and there are a number of nearby trails for long dog walks. Groups are accepted (not stag or hen parties), but please ask before booking a group.

On a lovely, single track road, this is a simple 'no frills' site. Accommodates tents and campervans: not sure if I'd tow a caravan though! Male and female toilets with free showers. Soap is also on the sinks. Washing-up room with Fairy Liquid provided too. There is a fridge (it might be a freezer - I didn't check). Electric shaver sockets and an outlet with 3-pin U.K. socket and 2x usb sockets for phone charging. Owner seems very helpful with signs offering assistance from charging phones to towing your vehicle! All-in-all, I loved the peace & quiet after a few days hiking up Low Fell & Fellbarrow, Rannerdale Knotts & Buttermere with my dog.

Lovely stay. Basic facilities, but cleaned regularly and the location made up for it, as it was perfect for our family who love bagging wainwrights. Peaceful and spacious. We also arrived two hours early, as we were planning on exploring once we had found the site, but owner was very accommodating and found us a pitch to setup on straight away. Will definitely be returning (actually just tried to book for October but they're closed for the season).

Wonderful stay in a very beautiful, quiet location, short drive from Keswick and the perfect base to explore the northern lakes. The site had a relaxed, quiet atmosphere with all the basics you need and nice hot showers!

We, the McClellan family, have owned Whinfell Hall Farm since 1950 and have enjoyed welcoming campers since the early 1960s! Our aim is to keep the campsite as traditional as possible and as inclusive as possible.

Things to do on site and in the Cockermouth area

The closest lakes are Crummock, Loweswater and Buttermere, all of which have perimeter walks. Fishing and boating permits can be obtained for all three.

Lorton Vale Trout Fishery is just a five minute drive away and Cockermouth Golf Club is also just 12 minutes up the road.

A 25 minute drive over Whinlatter pass takes you to Keswick, with restaurants and pubs, a theatre and plenty of walking and climbing shops. The Cumbrian coast is a little further, but there are some beaches, like St. Bees, just south of Whitehaven.
