About the site

This farm is a not for profit community interest company, setup in order to innovate and create sustainable small farm enterprises. It produces every cut of meat, every vegetable and every fruit it can. Value is added through doing its own butchery and processing, making ready meals and guests eating in the pub, cafe - and buying from the farm supports this. There is a core team of full and part time people who help across the enterprises, supervised work experience for adults with difficulties volunteers and much more, contributing to getting the huge amount of work done on site, to grow food and bring it to market. With 175 acres, there's no shortage of beautiful Hertfordshire countryside to enjoy and space for everyone to spread out on grassed pitches without electric. One area even offers a chance to swing a hammock from the trees or camp in tempting woodland. This is a place for quiet camping and the enjoyment of the countryside. Ideal for families and friends, there are unallocated pitches to enjoy for tents and motorhomes. Campfires are welcome and kids love meeting the animals, feeding sessions and all the fun of the farm. Plus, wooden cabins provide a cosy break for families (sleeping four) and bell tents (sleeping up to five) offer some incredible glamping packages to suit any taste. The cabins include mattresses and blow up beds with no bedding provided (wood burner in the cabins) and the bell tents have freshly laundered linen bedding as standard. You can add extra packages with prosecco and glasses, BBQing essentials and much more. Enjoy connecting with the land and getting to know where your food comes from!

Camping and the wooden cabins are open all year round. Bell tents are open Thursday-Sunday from the beginning of May until the end of the year. Pitches from £33/night for 2 people.

VW-Type Campervan - Non Electric Grass PitchesJun 2026

Overall, we had a pleasant stay at Church Farm and enjoyed our time there. It's a busy, family-friendly campsite with lots of groups, children and a lively atmosphere. The farm animals are lovely to see and are definitely one of the highlights for younger children. However, there were several aspects of our visit that were disappointing. Our six-year-old grandson had been looking forward to the goat walking experience for weeks. On the morning of the activity, staff measured him and determined he was approximately one inch below the minimum height requirement, so he was unable to take part. We did receive a refund, which was appreciated, but it was still very upsetting for him. While I understand that health and safety rules exist for a reason, it felt disappointing that there couldn't have been a little flexibility given how close he was to the requirement. The facilities for children were also somewhat underwhelming. The playground areas, woodland walk and some of the attractions felt quite worn and tired and were not as impressive as we had expected. In the woodland animal area, there were only two rabbits and a few guinea pigs to see, while several of the fenced enclosures were completely empty. Much of the play provision in the woodland seemed to consist of numerous plastic toy tractors scattered around, rather than a well-designed play area or engaging activities. We didn't come across a particularly good playground either. As a result, the whole area felt rather sparse and lacked the variety and imagination we had anticipated from a family-focused campsite. The toilets near reception were another let-down. They felt outdated, had an unpleasant smell and were not particularly clean during our visit. I was also surprised by the additional £12 charge for a "fire licence". The campsite advertises that campfires are permitted, but it was only upon arrival that we discovered there was an extra charge to have one. For this fee, we were given a red bucket of water and permission to have a fire. As an experienced camper, I already carry appropriate safety equipment and understand how to manage a campfire responsibly. The charge felt more like an unexpected extra fee than a genuine licence, and I think it would be better if this cost were made clearer at the time of booking. Finally, the café experience was poor. We ordered a jacket potato with tuna and a portion of chips and waited around 40 minutes for the food. Although it was lunchtime, the café wasn't exceptionally busy, and the wait felt excessive for such a simple order. Unfortunately, the service was extremely slow, and based on our experience I would recommend bringing your own food rather than relying on the café. Despite these issues, the campsite itself has a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere and plenty of space for children to run around. With some improvements to the facilities, cleanliness, transparency around additional charges and food service, it could be a much better experience.

Café and shop far too expensive.

Site's response

Thank you for your review, we hope you enjoyed the rest of your camping trip. We try to keep our prices reasonable for the shop and the café even though I am sure you're aware food costs have increased significantly. Staff costs have also increased hugely with the rise in minimum wage, and changes to national insurance. All of this has an impact on a small business such as us. We use local suppliers as much as possible; the meat is free range and the vegetables and fruit organic.

A note from the site themselves...

We are a community interest, not-for-profit social enterprise. We set up the site to innovate and create, replicable and sustainable small farm enterprises. The project started back in 2008 and it took over six years of losses and a steep learning curve to get it to full production and just break even!

At the heart of everything we do is rural care and education programmes. We provide training and work experience for people with learning disabilities and/or mental health issues and offer educational trips, internships and programmes to local schools and colleges.

Our 'Co-farmers' work with our experienced staff in small mixed-ability teams in a variety of jobs to suit individual interests, needs and abilities, contributing to the upkeep and maintenance of the farm. We are very proud of everything we do here and hope to keep it going for many year to come, Tara

Things to do on site and in the Stevenage area

This is a very special place, where all the family can visit a real working farm. They regularly offer events such as Egg Collecting, Lamb Bottle Feeding and Pygmy Goat Walking - and if you're staying during special holiday (e.g. Easter, Halloween etc.) then there are even more activities to choose from.

Go for gorgeous walks around the site, feed the animals and then show the little ones a good time at the woodland play area or follow the Fairy Trail.

Enjoy walking the farm and seeing the animals - this is your very own slice of country heaven.
