A small, quiet site close to the water. I feel it's only suitable for one or two nights due to limited facilities, but it more than makes up for it with its location.

Back to basics campsite next to the broads

Salhouse Broad Campsite is a back to basics camp, all it has is portable toilets and cold water pipe. You have to go through fields to reach the site and find a ranger, who gives you your pitch details. The field was quiet empty, so we had a nice pitch in the far corner, but the downside is we had to carry our camping gear across the field bit by bit, as no cars allowed on site, which was hard work Toilets were quiet a trek as they were near the entrance of field. However, we were next to a gate that led to the water and boats on the broads. There is also a small play area and coffee hut in next field selling drinks and ices and cakes, open 9am 'till around 5pm. You could swim, use your paddleboard or hire canoes in the broads as there is a small, manmade beach-type area. Pros were that it was a lovely, quiet site and is great if you like boats, water sports and lovely walks. Wildlife is lovely to hear at night. It's a cheap site with clean toilets and good value. Lovely stay here and only half hour to Great Yarmouth and Hemsby. Cons were that we were not allowed our car on the pitch to unload gear, so had walk our stuff across a field to pitch. Even when explained that I have disabilities, it was a no. But then next day, the next pitch along was dropping stuff off to their pitch area. It felt like depends which ranger is on at time of arrival. Camping area is quite remote to get to, and you have travel through 2 fields, but it is worth it.

Thank you for taking the time to review our site. You are correct that we don't allow cars on the campsite, this is to keep the site safe and to avoid the grass being churned up. We have a sign on the gate saying no cars beyond this point and if anyone drove on, it was because they ignored the sign, not because we allowed it. We're happy that despite this, you were able to enjoy your stay. Perhaps if you visit again, I would suggest that you select a pitch closer to the gate to avoid having to walk so far with your things.

Back to basic campsite, or simply a field with portaloo's and drinking water tap. Plenty of space between tents next to the River Bure, perfect for canoeing, fishing or lazing around. The staff are really friendly and the booking was straightforward. Vehicles are not allowed in the camping area, so be prepared to carry tents etc. into the camping field. The site and grass field to park is off the beaten track along a farm field with a locked gate to gain access. The lock combination all provided in the booking confirmation email. Lovely location, peaceful and a short walk between two pubs that serve food. Great little weekend getaway, recommend.

Came on the bus from Norwich for just one night, and hired a canoe with the same people that run the campsite. It's a straightforward check-in and the staff are super friendly and welcoming. Shame there are no showers, but it's a really lovely spot. Great nearby pub, Fur and Feather.

This is such an amazing camp site and we'll definitely come back. The canoeing on the broad was phenomenal and the location being a stone's throw from the water was so lush. The facilities are basic as listed on the website, but adequate for what we needed. The compost loos were much nicer than the portable toilets (other campers didn't seem to be using the compost loos - maybe they didn't realise how good they were or what they were). I'd go compost all the way on a lovely site like this! I have two tiny suggestions. It would be better for hygiene to have two separate water points. One for filling drinking water and a second (maybe with an outdoor sink?) for washing hands, etc. This would not be expensive or hard to do, but is a must really as people were washing hands at the single drinking water point which isn't ideal. Also I am all for having car free camping, but it would be great if you could drive on just at the start and end to load and unload your camping stuff. Really looking forward to seeing how this little site continues to run. A few tiny tweaks, but please don't develop it too much as this kind of back to basics camping is hard to find nowadays!

An eagerly anticipated holiday cut short due to a bug

This campsite is tucked away in a beautiful location and we were eagerly awaiting getting out on the river and seeing the otters and birds. Sadly our holiday lasted only one evening as most of our party fell ill with a bug. Overall the pitches are ok, quite a few are on a slant so get there early to choose a nice flat one, and the portaloos are very basic (no soap or water in some) but obviously cleaned daily. The river way next to the site is very busy so can be noisy with boats but seemed pleasant.

I'm surprised to hear the portaloo's weren't stocked with water and soap, keeping them clean and stocked is a priority for us, so please accept our apologies. Otherwise, we are glad that you enjoyed the beautiful location.

Whilst the location (only a hundred yards or so from Salhouse Broad) is lovely, the very limited facilities available on-site (namely 7 portaloos), did not warrant a pitching fee of £20 per night in my view.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. Since this review, I have update our description to ensure it is clear that our facilities are limited and what those facilities are (standpipe for water, portaloos and composting toilets). I'm sorry you didn't feel it was value for money.
