Great stay - will return

A lovely a stay at Castle Howard. The toilets and showers were spotless. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable regarding the local area. Lovely pub about a 2 mile walk - The Crown and Cushion but get an uber if your going after dark. We would stay here again but just be mindful TV reception is not the best and there is no wifi and the moblie signal is non existent on most networks.

Nice site in a good area

A November break so not the best of weather. Nice site really close to Castle Howard, so lovely to be able to visit. Friendly staff in reception. Good area for visiting local towns.

Do not make a noise

Dated, very basic. I have stayed at much nicer sites for less.

We understand that much depends on what kind of a holiday and holiday park a guest is expecting to find. Being in a very rural location, with the silence of the countryside and star-studded dark skies, is not everyone's 'cup of tea'. Information on Lakeside, it's available facilities and the locality is readily available to read on the internet before a decision to book a pitch is made, therefore disappointment can be avoided. The majority of our reviewers compliment the facilities and their cleanliness. Many guests, who make use of the 2 for 1 offer into the grounds of Castle Howard, think we offer great value for money, though 'value' for one person may not be 'value' to another; again it depends what you are looking for.

Lovely stay!

Lovely stay here. Our pitch was lovely under the trees and a few meters from the shower block which was really handy being in a roof tent. Beautiful lake opposite and got a good discount to visit Castle Howard which was a lovely half hour stroll away. The lady on reception was great and friendly but a few times we went to the shop and it was closed as she was cleaning the shower blocks. These were not too clean by Sunday morning but wouldn't put us off and would definitely stay again!

Our apologies that you found the shop closed; this was an exceptional circumstance so not a regular occurrence. I'm guessing that it was possibly a wet weekend when mud can get trailed in to the facilities on shoes overnight. Usually the cleanliness is praised but we have to trust that guests will respect the facilities between the deep cleans usually carried out between 12 noon and 2.00 p.m. after departures and before the majority of check-ins.

Great spot with some lovely walks

This campsite is in a lovely spot with some really great walks around Castle Howard. The 2-1 entry to Castle Howard is also a welcome discount and the adventure playground is great for kids. Shower block is a little small for the size of site but other than that a great place to go camping for the family.

Fantastic

Fantastic location. Nice hot showers with a great walk by the river and a view of the castle.

Good but needs improvement

Stayed here for 4 nights. Location is great and a handy shop on site, but there are issues that need sorting out. Our tent was on a pitch very close to the gravel road so with cars and people walking past, we didn't have much privacy, especially at night when you want to sleep. We also experienced frequent queuing to use the pot wash, toilets and showers. We would camp here again when it's less busy.

It's good to hear that you would stay again Ray. For the majority of the year Lakeside is a peaceful haven but of course, like all popular camping sites, we do get busy in the summer holidays. Unfortunately, choosing an electric grass pitch, of which there are only six, does mean that your location is fixed however at a quieter time of the year our receptionists would do their best to move you to another vacant pitch if you weren't happy with the one you were given. It's good to read that you would stay again Ray and we look forward to welcoming you back.

I'll be back!

Stayed just for a couple of nights as a tester for my grandson. It's a lovely site. Very helpful, friendly staff who helped out when I forgot my gas spanner! Thank you again. Clean facilities. If peace is what you're after, you won't be disappointed. Live the slow life.

Tent and motorcycle

Very nice place, quiet, surrounded by Nature and farmland. Friendly and charming personnel. I recommend this site.

The wonders of Castle Howard

Site was immaculate plenty of room between caravans great shower block and the shop onsite through a gate and your walking the shore of the Great lake of Castle Howard with one of the views of the house. The site is ideally located for the east coast or York - looking to go there next year.

Lovely site

A very pleasant, well laid out site with beautiful grounds. Beautiful trees all around, well kept environment which encourages wildlife, especially birds. Excellent sized hardstanding pitch, with easy access to electric hook up (included in the booking price which is very reasonable). Good spread of different options for staying, either vehicles or tents. The camping field looked huge. Plentiful toilets and showers for both women and men, and clean. Slight issue with where the drinking water and grey waste drain is. It is just through the drive in entrance to the hardstanding pitches, so if you need to fill up or empty grey waste for a motorhome, you effectively have to block access until the job is completed. It might be better to move the water and drain points round to the side of the toilet block to ease vehicle congestion. There is better parking space there and could possibly fit two vehicles at the same time without impeding traffic around the site. One or two issues about litter - some left stuck in hedges or shrubs, and unfortunately full dog bags dumped on the path up to the lakeside walk. Obviously, some dog owners don't bother about how they treat the surroundings, as long as it's in a bag! Perhaps more signage about disposing of bags thoughtfully and clearly marked disposal points? Easy access to local attractions and surroundings particularly Castle Howard (discount ticket prices if booked at Lakeside). Apart from a couple of gripes, a very good site, very friendly and helpful reception and thoroughly enjoyed the stay. Will definitely be back at some point.

Hello Dee, many thanks for your very thorough and detailed review of Lakeside. You have considered lots of points which are of interest to our guests and staff alike. I will pass your ideas regarding the water and grey waste to the appropriate team but fear that the roots of the large tree, in close proximity, is the reason for the present location; this and safety concerns for pedestrians moving around the shower and toilet block. You are right, it is a shame that some pet owners and guests are not as considerate about their rubbish and do not follow our 'code of conduct' as seen in our welcome leaflet provided on arrival. However, I can assure you that our ground staff work hard to maintain a tidy site and carry out regular checks particularly after busy weekends or windy weather to remove any litter left behind. We're pleased to read that you found our team friendly and helpful and we shall pass on our thanks for their good work. We look forward to seeing you again.

Great campsite

Great place with plenty of space.

Stunning location

Stunning location and nice time had. Washing up area is very small and hot, as cramped into the laundry room. That's only thing that let it down.

Great location

I loved this campsite. The only downside is that the non electric grass pitches are quite far from the toilet facilities. The field is large and the pitches aren't designated, so we chose a good spot at the edge near the trees. It is slightly sloped but it was easy enough to find a flat spot. The walk to Castle Howard starts on the roadside but most of it is along a shaded path. You can visit the shops and cafe without an entry ticket.

Worth the price

Beautiful location, friendly staff. Shame that the toilet block was miles away from the camping grounds, a bit of a hassle for little legs. Quite expensive, but worth it. Advice: million of local crows wake up at 4.30am in summer. Take your ear plugs.

Just like our own offspring, the young fledglings do like to demand breakfast as soon as they are awake! It's the way of the world.
