11 wild and romantic places to propose in the UK

Finding the perfect place to pop the question to your loved one definitely ranks as one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make. Luckily for all you hopeful brides and grooms, the UK still has an abundance of wild and romantic places to make that special moment even more memorable. From the world’s greatest romantic literary masterpieces to legendary tales of chivalry and grandeur, Britain’s romantic heritage is well known. Here are 11 that top the list in our books. Good luck!

Lake District

The Lake District is certainly one of the most unspoilt parts of the UK with plenty of picturesque places to declare your love without being disturbed. With chocolate box villages, miles of wild walks, glistening lakes and panoramic views of rolling hills, the Lake District is certainly an apt setting for your own romantic journey.

New Forest

The New Forest in southern England offers a natural escape to those living in its urban surroundings. Tiny hamlets, hidden pathways and open, unspoilt countryside make the New Forest a haven worth exploring. Although the New Forest is best known for its outdoor pursuits, the area also has an array of restaurants to choose from for a romantic night. Lymington, Beaulieu and Lyndhurst all have unique little eateries to enjoy.

Forest of Dean

Puzzlewood in the Forest of Dean in west Gloucestershire is a place of magic and intrigue. Over the years, this enchanting forest has inspired producers and novelists alike, including J R R Tolkien and his world renowned Lord of the Rings trilogy. We recommend visiting the area during bluebell season in spring when the forest is at its most beautiful.

Llanddwyn Island

This rugged Welsh island near Newborough Warren is often described as magical by those who visit. The narrow strip of land with its rolling dunes, intriguing historic buildings and coastal views is the perfect place to spend an intimate day with someone special away from the rest of the world.

South Downs

The South Downs stretch extends for around 260 square miles across the south east’s coastal counties from Hampshire to Beachy Head in the East. A trip to the Downs is a good option for escaping the hustle and bustle of London and surrounding cities in the south. A hot air balloon ride is a great way to view this stunning expanse of countryside with your loved one.

Cornwall

Cornwall is one of the UK’s most popular camping destinations including camping’s more glamorous cousin, glamping. What better way to say ‘I love you’ under the stars after a day at the beach than in your own yurt with a cushy bed, heating and all your home comforts?

Oxford

From Oxfordshire’s stunning rural landscapes to the county’s inspirational and historical city of Oxford, Oxfordshire is beautiful, charming and quintessentially English. One of the best ways to soak in Oxford’s old-fashioned romance and to create some of your own is onboard a chauffeur-led punt down the River Cherwell.

Bath

Like Oxford, Bath’s stunning architecture, beautiful parks and relaxed atmosphere all make it one of the best question-popping cities in the UK. If you want a truly gorgeous backdrop for your big moment, we recommend taking a subtle stroll through Prior Park’s 18th century gardens or around the Palladian Bridge through lush meadows and ancient woodland.

Stratford-Upon-Avon

The picturesque town of Startford-upon-Avon is synonymous with one of history’s most famous romantic poets: William Shakespeare. With its Tudor houses, quiet, meandering rivers, green parks and cobbled streets, it is easy to see how a young Shakespeare was inspired by the classic beauty of these surroundings. For some extra inspiration, why not attend a Shakespeare performance in one of the town’s theatres before going down on one knee?

Warwick Castle

Warwick Castle still looks like something from the pages of a fairytale that will take you back to times of old-fashioned chivalry and tradition. The castle, which was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror, is regarded as one of finest medieval castles in the UK. In 2009, Warwick was recognised by the Royal Institute of British Architects as the UK’s hottest place for a date.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

Wild, romantic and rugged are just a few words to describe the Scottish Highlands. The Glenfinnan Viaduct, between Fort William and Mallaig in the west, perfectly captures the stunning beauty of the area from its lofty perch. Romantics can savour it all by travelling along the viaduct on the Jacobite Steam Train which runs from May to October.

There are plenty of romantic spots to choose from whilst roaming around the UK’s variety of landscapes, from quiet, old-fashioned towns that are steeped in history to wild forests and rolling hills. In fact, there are so many perfect places to choose from that it begs another question: how can you possibly choose?
