Our favourite Lincolnshire walks

If you’re visiting Lincolnshire one of the best ways to explore this beautiful region is on foot. There is a superb variety of Lincolnshire walks to choose from that cater to all fitness levels, time constraints and scenery preferences.

Below you’ll find a selection of our favourite routes that will suit both casual and more experienced walkers, from multi-day treks to routes that will only take a couple of hours to complete.

Viking Way

Walkers who are up for a long-distance challenge won’t be disappointed with the Viking Way. This route travels over 147 miles through diverse landscapes, starting at the banks of the River Humber and ending at Rutland Water. You will travel through the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds, follow a former railway route, pass over fenland and have the opportunity to explore a number of towns and villages along the way. The Viking Way can also be enjoyed in shorter sections.

Car Dyke

Suitable for children and adults, Car Dyke can be explored via a choice of two easy walks that will appeal to visitors keen to explore the fens, both of which start from Dunston Fen car park. The shorter route is around 3 miles long following a circular walk around Nocton Wood, while the longer route is 4 miles long and passes through pasture land and pretty countryside, with occasional stiles to climb over. Both walks provide the chance to see the ancient Roman dyke which archaeologists believe played a role in assisting the Romans to drain the fens.

Lincs Wold Way

For walkers who have time to spare and are eager to see as much of the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds as possible, the Lincs Wold Way is a route well worth considering. The walk covers 80 miles and has been divided into 5 sections, though you can choose to begin and end at any point if you don’t want to complete the entire route. You will get to experience diverse areas en route, from bustling villages to quiet country roads and picturesque open fields and woodland.

Lincolnshire Limewoods at Bardney

This walk is a great choice if you love to wander in stunning woodland and perhaps catch glimpses of the local wildlife if they’re lucky, as the woods are home to a range of wildlife including deer, bats and woodpeckers to name a few. There are two walk options for exploring the Lincolnshire Limewoods at Bardney, one of which is around 6 miles long and the other around 8.5 miles long. The walk takes you through two beautiful woods and you also get to see the ruins of two abbeys.

Chapel Point to Anderby Creek

If the coast calls to you, there’s plenty of stunning coastal scenery to enjoy in the Lincolnshire Coastal Country Park. The walk from Chapel Point to Anderby Creek can be completed via a shorter or longer route depending on walkers’ preferences. There is a lot to see along the way, including nature reserves, great sea views and the Anderby Creek Cloud Bar which was designated the world’s first official cloud-spotting area.

Water Rail Way

The Water Rail Way offers something a little different for walkers who want to combine both the beauty of nature and man’s creativity. The 33-mile route runs from Lincoln to Boston and has a number of artworks that can be viewed along the way in addition to the lovely surrounding landscape. Fairly flat along the entire length, this route isn’t strenuous and can be enjoyed by younger and older walkers alike.

Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival

Anyone keen to explore the Lincolnshire Wolds on foot in a group should consider visiting the area during the Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival. This annual event provides an excellent variety of walks to suit all fitness levels and distance preferences. The walks are led by walk leaders so you don’t need to worry about getting lost. The majority of the walks are free and for many it is possible to just turn up at the right time to participate in the chosen walk, though some walks do need to be booked beforehand.

Stunning strolls and amazing adventures to suit all walkers

The walks above provide something to suit everyone, from diverse landscapes to the chance to spot local wildlife, eye-catching artworks and historical structures. Perhaps you’re looking for a laidback, easy route for an hour or two’s strolling or alternatively are eager to cover extensive ground and see a wide part of Lincolnshire.
