Why choose Capel Battery

Small, basic motorhome site set by an unrestored historic World War II gun battery site

By the North Downs Way, five minutes to Folkstone and ten minutes to Dover

Within a five minute walk of a pub and the Battle of Britain Memorial

About the site

The site is home to 13 acres of land, including the gun emplacements, Nissan huts and views across the English Channel. The site is also next door to the Battle of Britain Memorial and the North Downs Way walking route, as well as being five minutes from Folkestone and ten minutes from Dover. The five electric hardstanding and three electric grass pitches are set along a concrete strip with grassy areas to the side. Pitches are offered on a first come, first serve basis and each comes with a 16 amp electric hook up and water standpipe, allowing up to four guests in motorhomes and RVs only. Dogs are very welcome, with up to five permitted per pitch. Please note, there are no toilets or showers onsite. Open fires and BBQs are prohibited. The onsite remains are in the process of being restored, so there may be works going on. Due to the nature of the site, kids should always stay with an adult. There are solar powered lights in the main area, but it is recommended you bring a torch as there is very little lighting at night.

Grass pitches are available from 30th January while the hardstanding pitches are open all year round. Pitches from £22/night for 2 people.

Grotty site with malfunctioning gate

Motorhome - Electric Hardstanding PitchesMay 2026

Fairly desolate site. We'd book a hard standing with electric hook-up. We chose this site as it is very close to Dover and we had an early ferry. It's unmanned but with a 24x7 entry code gate, so perfect for 4.30am departures. Or so you would think! The site itself is basically a concrete path next to a building site where the owners are restoring an old WW2 bunker and gun emplacement. You park on the path. There's just about enough room for another motorhome to squeeze past. The pub 50 yards down the road was closed and the onsite toilets were locked. When we (and another motorhome) tried to leave at 4.30 for our ferry and their Channel booking, the gate failed and wouldn't open, and it's a serious security gate. After several frantic phone calls, the owner answered and said he was in Turkey! Fortunately, a workman who was working on the bunker was staying on site so we were able to wake him and he used a remote, which did work, to open the gates, but if he hadn't been there, we still would be, instead of being in France!

Motorhome - Electric Hardstanding PitchesJul 2025

Had a very peaceful stay ,surrounded by a great historic site & also surrounded by some fantastic walks & the views were amazing! If you love nature & wild camping in a very safe, all be it tho a very basic site then this site is for you & the fact that a local pub is just minutes outside the gate is a big bonus & a stunning hill top cafe is just approx 15 mins walk away 😀 This site is especially ideal if you take your furry friends as the walks are just priceless!

Motorhome - Electric Hardstanding PitchesOct 2024

Basic stop over which was fully described in the details beforehand. It does look a bit uncared for, but we did enjoy our stay. The instructions we received before our arrival were very detailed. It's on a bus route into Folkestone. We were the only people staying, so nice and quiet, but dark at night, so take a torch. All in all, a good location and interesting site but not sure if I would stay again as limited to 2 days, due to no toilet or Elsan waste point.

A note from the site themselves...

Imagine stepping back in time to a former World War II gun battery site, built in 1941 as a defence against a possible German invasion. Purchased by my father John Button in 2009, our family has spent the last 15 years restoring the site to its former glory.

We've unearthed the gun battery and Nissan huts bases and gained access to the underground plotting room, dressing station, and ammunition bunker. The journey has been exhilarating, and we've created a museum that's open for visitors most weekends. Come and witness history come to life, Martin
