About The Old Vicarage at Elkesley Campsite
The Old Vicarage is a 17th century house (once indeed owned by a vicar) in a small village conveniently located just off the A1, six miles from Worksop and 25 miles from Nottingham. The campsite is peaceful, relaxing and fun.
Pitches are located around the grounds, which run down to the banks of the tranquil River Poulter. Here there is an ornamental bridge, along with ancient oak trees, pretty ash and acacias growing. It feels romantic and often hosts weddings and events.
Kids love to hop along the stepping stones in the river, have a dip (under the watchful eyes of an adult) and there is also a chance to swing over the water in a rope swing.
All pitches are grassed, with both electric and non electric available in a broad range of sizes.
For those who aren't bringing a tent with them, there's the comfort of a cosy cabin with furnished interior and en-suite, which sleeps six.
The Old Vicarage at Elkesley Campsite is open all year round.
Site facilities include a washing-up area and bathrooms with showers, toilets and baby changing facilities. There are also a selection of outdoor play amenities for kids including a rope swing across the river, a zipwire for young children and if you bring an inner tube with you, there will be river rides for kids.
Guests have access to a cave bar (open during bank holidays only) which includes an area selling snacks and junior fishing rod and nets for the river, a bar with a relaxing chill out room and a TV in reception which is available on request, plus rustic outdoor seating. The site can also supply fire wood, fire pits and BBQs. Free WiFi is provided.

A note from the site themselves...
The Old Vicarage is set in former monastic land most of which belonged to Welbeck Abbey. To this day, the Abbey's secrets are still being revealed, its subterranean passages having even been used to store the nation's art treasures during the Second World War.
The Duke of Newcastle provided a rich variety of trees to the Old Vicarage including False Acacia, Sycamore, Lime, and varieties of Ash and Oak, to name but a few. The contrasts of green, that turn to gold in autumn, together with the River Poulter, make the Old Vicarage an unusual venue that lends itself to photographic opportunities.

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass Tent Pitches (Medium)Apr 2023
Really nice chilled out site. Owners really friendly, even came round in the morning to see if we slept well! Very nice on site bar. Fantastic for kids playing in the river which runs the site. Not busy even though it was bank holiday. Reasonably priced too.
Great location

Large Tent - Electric Grass PitchesMay 2024
Great stay at The Old Vicarage. Not many toilets or showers but I only had to queue a couple of times, could do with another block of toilets and showers though.
Kids loved the river and the bank holiday duck race!
Will definitely come again.
Site's response
Thank you Rosanna for your lovely review.
As you may have seen coming down the drive, we have already bought our new toilets but unfortunately, due to the amount of rain, we cannot get this across the river where it is going to be situated at the moment so it is in limbo!!
Hope to see you again soon.
Small, picturesque site, very close to the A1

Small Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesSep 2023
Stopped here for one night as location ideal for following 2023 Tour of Britain.
It is very close to the A1, so the rumble of road noise is pretty constant. Seemed deserted on arrival (it is not peak season) and there was no answer on the telephone, so just got myself set-up; helpfully got an email shortly after to say on-site staff unexpectedly had to leave and someone else arrived shortly after that.
Whilst the site is very beautiful and low-key, the two toilets and one shower could do with a spruce-up (or a clean) and I never managed to get the shower anything other than cold.
I'd like to come back in a busier period as I believe these minor issues would be addressed, and hopefully the bar would be open!

Things to do on site and in the Retford area
There's plenty of space around the site for traditional outdoor activities, with a rope swing and stepping stones over the shallow river and a bridge that's perfect for playing Pooh-sticks.
In the surrounding area there are animal parks and nature reserves to walk around, or you could follow one of the trails in historic Sherwood Forest.
There's a zipwire for little ones under 10, or you can bring a tyre tube with you and take to the water for an exhilarating ride. The river is also a fantastic venue for duck races.
Back on dry land, cook up something tasty on the BBQ.
Other attractions in the area include:
Idle Valley Nature Reserve
Sundown Adventureland
Hodsock Priory
Bassetlaw Museum
