Don’t Miss

  • Milton Keynes Museum
  • Bekonscot Model Village
  • Stowe House and Gardens
  • Bletchley Park

Sights to turn heads

For your tour of Buckinghamshire’s beautiful country houses, start with Hughenden Manor, which served as the home of Victorian Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli or discover the stunning Waddesdon Manor with its picturesque grounds containing an aviary. Enchanted gardens and secret temples are in store at Stowe House which dates from the 17th century. Equally enticing are the beautiful gardens at Stowe containing three lakes and more than 40 monuments, so plenty to delve into here.

Always fancied your chances as a spy? There's real secrets of codebreaking during WWII Bletchley Park, where you can feel the thrill of a time when the nation's secrets were hanging in the balance. Here too is the National Museum of Computing, with plenty that will make you stare at your smartphone in amazement, things have changed so fast! You'll be bowled over by the size of WITCH, the world's oldest working digital computer.

Set the seal on a brilliant day, with a visit to the Chiltern Open Air Museum, setting for historic buildings that have been lovingly restored as well as a working farm demonstrating traditional farming techniques.

A trip to Buckingham Old Gaol Museum provides the opportunity to learn about Buckingham and rural life as well as explore an 18th century prison - not somewhere you'd want to be locked away! Buckinghamshire County Museum will have you learning all about the artwork, wildlife and archaeology of the county. Plus, if you bring the kids, they'll be over the moon at the Roald Dahl Children's Gallery, tucked inside the museum.

Steam over to Buckinghamshire Railway Centre where little munchkins can take rides on Thomas the Tank Engine and for those a bit older, there's the chance to sit back in a padded carriage, listen to the soothing run of the engine and watch rolling hills chug by.

If the hills are calling, Bucks has more than enough green spaces. Part of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty lies within Buckinghamshire and the varied landscapes within the AONB, from woodland to farmland, it's all here. To get a mix formal and wilder areas head to Cliveden, where the grand house is now a hotel, but the gardens are yours to roam. How good are you navigating skills? The Cliveden maze has the answer.

For something a bit different, those who are feeling brave can venture into the Hell-Fire Caves on a tour to discover underground passages, chambers and perhaps even the cave’s reputed ghosts spooking around the corners. Back above ground, lift the lid on the craft of brewing courtesy of a Chiltern Brewery tour which also includes a tutored food and beer tasting session – no doubt welcome refreshments after a tiring day of sightseeing.

Flights of fancy

If you've a need for speed, show your driving prowess at Formula Fast Karting which caters to racers as young as 8 years old up to adults. Or if your knuckles go white at the thought of flying around a track at high speeds, take aim at a fast-moving target, instead, with GB Shooting, which offers clay pigeon shooting in picturesque countryside surroundings. Buckinghamshire's proud of its real country heritage and this is a great way to live and breathe it.

If the thrills of indoor skydiving, climbing or snowsports sound tempting, Xscape knows how to get the adrenaline flowing. There's even bowling and a casino, all perfect for when the skies open. Mountain bikers on the other hand should head to the hills at Aston Hill Bike Park which has no less than eight high octane tracks and jumps, with names like Ricochet and Pumptrack, guaranteed to get your heart beating.

Discover the striking Chiltern Hills AONB, with trails that are begging to be walked, such as the butterfly walk within the Ivinghoe Hills. For those on two wheels, there's a stretch of the 170-mile long Chilterns Cycleway which passes through Buckinghamshire.

The Grand Union Canal is a pleasant attraction for canal-side strolls or laidback cruises, or get interactive with the water and turn your hand to sailing, kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddle boarding.

Adventure and friends for the kids

Families who are mad about animals will go wild for attractions such as Abbotts View Alpacas - say hello to the friendly four legged residents - and Odds Farm Park with its captivating farm animals and fun indoor and outdoor play activities. The Horse Trust  is also sure to get a whinny of approval, where you'll be paired with entra horses, donkeys and ponies. St Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital Visitor's Centre is worthy of any children's story, but this real life hospital takes in wounded wildlife and will have you getting to know a bird with a bandaged wing or hedgehog lapping at its milk.

Milton Keynes Museum provides a great family day out with lots of hands-on exhibits that will engage the mind and body alike. From recreated high street shops from days gone by to taking shelter during a WWII air raid, the story here is richly woven and interactive. Alternatively let younger kids’ imaginations run wild in the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, where there's storytelling, crafts and beloved characters come to life. The museum is aimed at children aged 6 to 12 and features an abundance of fun hands-on activities that will get their creativity juices flowing.

The Bekonscot Model Village and Railway is the world’s oldest model village, intriguing your eyes with a view of how England once was in the 30s when this attraction opened. Families looking to get active will have no shortage of action at Aerial Extreme which features high rope adventure courses that will captivate both younger and older adventurous spirits. If more covert capers are in order, Si5 Spy Missions is the ideal place to test stealthy spy skills with a range of puzzles and action-packed missions. The beautiful Wendover Woods is also a fantastic place for a wild family day out, with Go Ape Wendover Woods, pretty walks, a Gruffalo trail and a family-friendly cycle trail just some of the woodland delights on offer here.
