Ulverston, Cumbria & Lake District

Campsite aerial

Birchbank is a small campsite on a Lake District sheep farm, located on the fells between Coniston Water and the Duddon Estuary. The site has a small stream running through it which the children love to play in and is next to the fell, with footpaths and bridleways directly from the gate making it ideal for walking and cycling.

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesAug 2023

Simply a getaway from town life. Nothing but sheep and fields for miles. Toilets and showers are super clean. The site is spotless with a little area for every size tent. Small beck running through for the kids to play. Close to lakes. And a small trip to the local town. For all things needed. Will be visiting again soon. Great little find.

Lovely wild place

This campsite is lost in the countryside, with hills, horses and sheep everywhere. Very quiet and chill. The commodities are very clean and simple. A very good place.

A great little campsite with clean facilities! Large pitches and plenty of space between campers. Room for the kids to play about and they loved paddling in the small stream as well!

Beautiful campsite, really clean and was very quiet too. Would definitely recommend & return again. Owners were lovely to chat to, very interesting to hear about their lives and the son was great to chat with as well, all very hardworking family x

Large Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesJul 2023

Birchbank is in a lovely remote location. The views are stunning and yet it's not too far from shops in Ulverston. The Aldi, M&S, Greggs, Starbucks & Booths are only about a 20 minute drive away. Really good price and spacious pitches. We only saw the hosts upon arrival, apart from that we were left to it, which was good for us as we prefer that. There was a little stream that went through the campsite which the kids loved and we loved the sound of at night. The toilets & showers were clean (the water in the wash/toilet area was a bit off coloured, so do recommend taking hand sanitiser if that bothers you). The only thing we weren't sure of was that the toilets and showers were all unisex, as you could be in there with men and women at the same time. Definitely worth a visit.

Excellent campsite, wonderfully remote. Bonus being on a working farm and can only hear animals and running water. Teenage children enjoyed themselves and helped with limited mobile signal, so being outdoors was the best option. Better weather would have been a bonus, but can't have everything!

Superb, a great remote campsite

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesJul 2023

You won't be disappointed. What a find! Remote working farm campsite run by the lady of the farm. She is a saint, never stops and could not be more pleasant & helpful. 12 spacious numbered grass pitches in the main camp area nearest the facilities, more space through a field entrance to a grassy field. Well tended, kept mown and good drainage. Our advice - in the main camp area you may need hard ground pegs. Facilities are not luxurious but perfectly adequate for a farm campsite. Facilities are shared. Water pressure in the electric showers is weak but we have similar in our village so used to that. The water is good hot. The toilets are well stocked decent soft toilet paper, (Hint if you run out, look up!) and, glory be, a loo brush. (I have a bowel condition and need a brush, often overlooked on campsites). The wash up area is one sink but we did not have any waiting as it was not so busy whilst we were there. (Another hint: the water is absolutely scalding). Round the corner is a small utility room, washer/drier, fridge/freezer etc (honesty box so pay up). The facilities are kept scrupulously clean at all times. Excellent service. The weather was horrendous most of the time we were there but we were there to test our tent anyway. All in all a lovely little site if you want remote and peace and quiet. We will definitely return. Well done to the owner. Your site is smashing. Thank you.

Peace

I don't want to recommend because I want to keep it a secret. Been here a number of times for a peaceful break from the outside world. No shops. No entertainment. No loud music. No traffic. Perfect. See you next time.

Short and sweet. Woke up early to the owner cleaning the shower and loo block! Says it all 👍🏻

Small Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesJun 2023

The location was beautiful, very remote. There's nothing but hills for miles, great for walkers. There's a no noise policy after 10 pm so not for party people. The owner was very nice and helpful, although neglected to tell us that large groups of teenage hikers would be arriving for the second half of our stay. They were all extremely well behaved but the showers and toilet facilities were not enough to cope with the amount of users. There are 3 showers (one ended up out of order), 3 toilets and 1 dish sink for about 100 tents and campervans at one point. Overall though we enjoyed our stay, everybody there adhered to the no noise after 10 policy, even the larger groups of campers. I would recommend this site for the views and the peace and quiet. Probably not great for kids as nothing to occupy them.

Site's response

Sorry that the family bathroom was out or order on Sunday night. Some of the tiles had to come off and had to be cemented back on. We had 24 pitches booked on Friday night so we were full, the Duke of Edinburgh group had 1 and 2 man tents, so there was more than one on a pitch.

What can I say….. amazing. The drive in was just beautiful. The views and surroundings are stunning. The camp site got everything you need. Not luxurious. Very basic but suited us just fine. Even got to see the farmer and his dog rounding the sheep up. Loved it.

Very clean facilities, nice flat pitch with great walks on the doorstep. Perfect get away from the rush of normal life as you have to climb a hill to get a data network!

It was an amazing week apart from the rain 🌧 most of the week, but a holiday is what you make of it The site was amazing, basic but exceptionally clean. They have a washer and dryer, fridge/freezer for your use, but please help them by donation 🙏 😀 It's only fair, there is an honesty jar 🫙 We managed to see them sheering their 🐑 a couple of days, the pitches are a little uneven but the view of the fells certainly counteracts.

Great campsite for the family, outstanding views. My only criticism would be the cut off point should be 9pm not 10pm, people arriving at 9.55pm to set up is not ideal.

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesJun 2023

It's off the beaten track, but well worth this visit. A working farm at the bottom of Coniston lake tucked away in the hills. It was a fantastic find for our weekend away with 2 small boys, who loved the views of sheep in the fields. The campsite was flat in places, pitches by a stream, or in the field with 360 views. It was quiet and lovely and a hit with families. Toilets and showers were immaculate, well kept and plenty of hot water. A lovely stay, we will definitely be back.

Gorgeous location, nestled amongst hills and grazing land for sheep and cows. Really generous selection of facilities and all very accessible. Plenty of room on the site and friendly people. So reasonably priced too! 10/10 stay, would highly recommend.

Small Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesJun 2023

We arrived with a large tent, having booked for a small tent. This was no problem, in fact, we were offered any vacant site including an electric point (without electricity). There are 4 toilets, 3 showers, a washing up sink, a washing machine, dryer and a fridge, all newly painted and cleaned each night. There is information about shopping, routes for cyclists to avoid busy roads and local activities. Access is via a narrow single track with sheep. Most enjoyable.

VW-Type Campervan - Non Electric Grass PitchesJun 2023

Beautiful, quiet site. Very much off the beaten track, great if you want to get away from it all. It's a working sheep farm so expect some farm smells, but not at all bad. Facilities were good. Nice hot water and good shower facilities. There's a shared-use fridge which is very helpful if you're staying in hot weather.

Quiet camp site, surrounded by lovely fields. We stayed with a 1 year old and she was very excited to see the sheep nearby and all the birds that flew over. Camp site manager/ owner was friendly and helpful when we arrived. Facilities were basic but clean and as expected.
