A jewel in the Essex countryside. When it came to conjuring up a 40th birthday event that suited family, friends and young kids, would be set casually, outdoors, could entertain outdoor games, involve a BBQ and accommodate those travelling and needing to stay overnight, Woodchests was the first choice. Turns out it was the only choice as nothing else would come close. What a great decision that was! Firstly, it's a beautiful and peaceful location - a gem in Essex countryside and we felt secure after dark too with the locked gates. Our welcome and orientation of the site by a member of the booking team (Rhys) was very handy and he went above what typically expected in familiarising us and reassuring us he was 'on call' all hours. The impressive safari tents are well-equipped for cooking, dining and drinking. The furnishings are so in keeping and tastefully styled. We all adored the cabins and were impressed with the comfy beds with plenty of space for bags and clothing. A highlight was the cabin bed - a big draw for the younger members. When it comes to cooking, the wood-fuelled bbq is great, with plenty of wood provided too. For a rural and very authentic 'glamping' experience, the indoor toilet, sink and shower were very welcome! Water pressure is unexpectedly strong. The beautiful meadow offers a great space outside the tent to play and a good sized wooden picnic table was ideal for entertaining. Other mentions: Gas-powered fridge is very effective and useful. Solar powered lights and lanterns were supplied and provided suitable lighting. Very peaceful with the lack of traffic noise - a real off-grid escape Lastly, with no ambient light, Woodchests is ideal for star gazing. A treasure of a site in the Essex countryside maintained to the highest and most nature-friendly standards. We'll be back! Hopefully before a 50th! Thank you to Claire & Hugh for their services.

We stayed in one of the bell tents with our 3 children, and our friends stayed in the other two tents on the campsite. This is a perfect location for a weekend getaway with friends away from the business of life. The site is secure enough that we could allow our children to be independent and run around with their friends without worrying about any one else. We moved the pizza ovens together to create a BBQ for all the families, we played rounders on the field with all the families. The tents were very clean, with all of the amenities you could possibly need for a relaxing weekend camping. We had such a brilliant time we will be booking again for next year.

Safari Tent - Oak Safari TentOct 2023

Me and my two children had a great stay here in October - wholesome fun with lots of space outside to play in the day, then in the evening toast marshmallows on the fire. The children really loved the cabin bed! Check in was very good - Tim showed me how to use everything. The tent is in a secluded area so best for 2 adults as opposed to a single adult with children.

A good place to stay and relax

Safari Tent - Oak Safari TentSep 2023

Amazing experience. I spent two nights glamping with my family, including my elderly mother. The tent is very well equipped, it has everything that you'd need. Hugh was extremely helpful. He communicated with us before our arrival and met us upon arrival (even though we were late). He accompanied us to the tent and explained how things work. Over the weekend, he made available an extra battery to charge our mobile phones with. The site is well maintained. The distance between the tents are large enough to give you privacy. They might, however, want to ensure that the board games are complete. I would recommend this place in a heartbeat. Thanks so much Hugh and your team.

Booked for a 40th Birthday celebration with family and friends. Great rural, scenic and tranquil location. Set in beautiful countryside with wild walks and the great outdoors awaits you. Had a nice walk down to the lake and enjoyed playing games on the field to the front of the tents. Met promptly at the gate by the very welcoming, professional and helpful Reece who showed us the tents, ran through all the amenities and showed us how to work everything for our stay. Lovely comfy double beds, bunk beds and the hideaway cabin beds. Bedding supplied and plenty of pillows. Able to drive up to the glamping tents, offload and return car to the car park. Nice flat field area for games and fun. Fully equipped tents - fridge, gas stove, running hot and cold water. Log 🪵 fuelled pizza oven/BBQ. Shower and toilet. Solar lights and USB charger points. Had an amazing get together with family and friends to celebrate my bro in law's birthday - enjoyed a BBQ, music and drinks. It's great that everyone can enjoy the outdoors, children are safe and can play on the field and you have all the luxuries that glamping provides. Thank you Woodchests for making happy memories.

We went as a family to celebrate our son's 40th birthday and we had a marvellous time staying in a great place with facilities that surpassed our expectations such as flushing toilets and a hot shower (great water pressure), not to mention the comfy beds. The tents were very well equipped for cooking & dining (i.e.: pots, pans, cutlery & crockery) and the outside space was private and peaceful (inc. a wood-fired BBQ/pizza oven) with a lake and parking nearby. The solar-powered lights throughout & the camping lights provided gave all the light needed. Plus, no ambient light outside made for ideal stargazing.
