Things to do in Ludlow
Ludlow is a busy market town in Shropshire that's packed with quintessentially English beauty. With impressive historical buildings, the kind of castle all kids dream of and plenty of places to eat and drink, it has become a thriving tourist hub in the West Midlands.
Take a guided walking tour around town or pick up a walking guide from the tourist office to take a riverside walk along the historic Bread Walk, the views from Whitcliffe Common are fabulous, and just a 10 minute stroll from the centre of Ludlow.
Stokesay Castle is perhaps the town's most famous site. This 14th century fortified manor house overlooks the River Orny and is a total must-see. It’s the finest and best-preserved fortified medieval manor house in England. Discover the great hall, unchanged for over 700 years. Spot characters carved in the timbers of the 17th-century gatehouse and climb to the top of a fairy-tale tower for breath-taking views of the Shropshire Hills.
Ludlow Castle is also well worth a visit, the finest of medieval ruined castles set in glorious Shropshire countryside, at the heart of this superb, bustling black and white market town. Duck low beneath the timbers to enter shops on the main street, these were built when Britons were a good deal shorter!
St Laurence's church is also impressive and the largest parish church in the county. It is situated in the centre of Ludlow on the hill around which the medieval town developed.
Get outdoors with the kids and explore on the Ludlow self-guided mystery themed Treasure Trail. A two mile route, completely self-guided and done in your own time so you can take as long as you like.
Looking for a unique day out with a yummy treat? Ludlow Food Centre is where farming, food production and shopping all come together to create a very special environment.
Tucked away in the Shropshire Hills, is the ancient Acton Scott historic working farm. Visitors are encouraged to come and experience its timeless appeal or learn rural crafts that would make your great grandmother proud.
Ludlow is situated on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's an ideal base for walking and walkers wishing to explore the hills, valleys and forests of The Marches. Ludlow also offers gentler walking opportunities into the surrounding countryside, and Whitcliffe Common, with its panoramic views, overlooks the castle and town.
The dark night skies above the Shropshire Hills make it truly a phenomenal location for stargazers to stare up at the heavens overhead. There are no fewer than four Dark Sky Discovery Sites in the area, all of them on or around the Long Mynd, but there are many places not designated which have little light pollution.
While indoor activities could include a trip to Berrington Hall or Whitley Court (grand country houses), the Ludlow Brewing Company, Ludlow Racecourse, or one of the 10 Ironbridge Gorge Museums.
Nearby Croft Castle boasts over 1500 acres of surrounding farm, park and woodland to explore.
The countryside surrounding Ludlow is fantastic to explore offering those who love the great outdoors hills and forests and opportunities to spot a variety of wildlife, flora and fauna. The Brown Clee Hill is the highest summit in Shropshire, and the nearby Mortimer Forest is home to many varieties of tree. Offa's Dyke, the Jack Mytton Way and the Shropshire Way are all on Ludlow's doorstep and provide excellent routes for keen walkers, cyclists and horse riders alike.
Ludlow is a good base to explore this area from: within an hour (often much less), you can experience the delights of Shrewsbury, Shropshire's county town; the cathedral city of Hereford; the south Shropshire Hills such as the Longmynd, Caer Caradoc, the Stiperstones and Wenlock Edge. From there, sample real Herefordshire cider and perry or visit Ironbridge, the birthplace of the industrial revolution and an UNESCO World Heritage Site, or explore the uncrowded hills and valleys of Mid-Wales.
