Things to do in Bridgnorth
Your visit has to start with Bridgnorth Cliff Railway, England’s oldest and steepest inland electric funicular railway! For over a century the railway has been transporting the people of Bridgnorth up and down the 111 ft sandstone cliffs that separate High Town from Low Town, and the River Severn.
Just as rewarding but for the more energetic amongst you can amble up one of the seven sets of steps, or the steep ancient Cartway, one of Shropshire's most interesting streets which leads up from the flower-filled Quayside. Whichever route you choose to the top, you can enjoy King Charles' finest view from Castle Walk, before checking out another of the valley's superlatives, the castle keep, that leans at an impossible angle greater than the Tower of Pisa.
The castle keep is the only remaining part of Bridgnorth Castle. The grounds form pleasure gardens surrounding a bandstand, with the town War Memorial strategically placed overlooking Pampudding Hill.
Nearby an iron footbridge takes you to the Severn Valley Railway Station. If you want to explore the beautiful Severn Gorge to the south, you should definitely let the steam train of Severn Valley Railway take the strain. You will be treated to splendid views which are only visible from the railway, with naturally wild landscapes and twee country stations, each one offering local villages and riverside walks for serene exploration. It makes for a marvellous adventure for all levels of activity, whether you're hoping for a sit and stare trip or a jump off and see what you can find version.
For architecture hunters head to Bridgnorth Town Hall, there aren't too many buildings like this left in the country, straddling the High Street, Bridgnorth Town Hall is a wonder to behold. Then there’s St Mary's Church, with its prime location in the castle park looking out forever to the beautiful town of Bridgnorth. Both locations are a photographer’s dream.
Bond had to start somewhere, so get your little spies out on the Bridgnorth Spy Mission Treasure Trail. It’s packed to the brim with handy hints that will guide you all over the town on the hunt for clues.
The Sun Valley Canoeing Company specialises, as the name suggests, in canoe trips for families in their Canadian style vessels. The River Severn, teeming with wildlife, is one of the longest rivers in Britain and winds through scenic countryside, offering you a magnificent opportunity to enjoy Shropshire's natural beauty with no carbon footprint.
Rays Farm is a special place to bring the family and enjoy a relaxing day in a little bit of Shropshire’s finest countryside. Offering animals, woodland walks, sculpture trails, play areas, den building and climbing ropes.
Should rain spoil the fun, head on over to Millie Meerkats Playbarn. An educational children’s’ play area with a difference. From fun and educational animal encounters with meerkats, snakes, spiders and more to 2 floors of soft play, enclosed safe indoor basketball and football court, inflatable bouncing zone, toddlers’ play area and Millie's Fun Club.
Perhaps sports are your kind of fun... Endowed Leisure Centre gets the job done with plenty of fun on offer. The sports hall has a tonne of activities to get little legs moving, racket sports are always a top choice. Swimming lessons are available as well as slides and a wave machine.
A short drive away takes you to Upper Arley and Arley Arboretum, where you can discover a Worcestershire wonderland of rare trees, walled gardens and child-friendly attractions. Easy to get around and with lovely tea rooms, it’s a great day out for all the family.
Daniels Mill in Eardington is one of Shropshire's gems. It holds the distinction of having the largest diameter waterwheel of any working corn mill in England.
Also nearby and worth a visit is Dudmaston Hall which remains today what is has been for 875 years, a much loved and lived-in family home. Now run by The National Trust this lovely country home is surrounded also by stunning gardens.
If you’re keen for a day trip and travelling a little further afield, Telford, Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury are all good options.
