About the site

Nestled in peaceful countryside within the National Landscape between the towns of Sandown and Brading, this site is a handy base to explore the Isle of Wight. With family friendly facilities, including a seasonal heated outdoor swimming pool (open May to September), private fishing lake, shop, cafe and a nature reserve next door, there is plenty of things to do without leaving the site. Choose from a range of pitches in different areas, all accommodating tents, roof tents, trailer tents, campervans, caravans, and motorhomes. Each area is separated by trees and hedging, giving a smaller, cosy feel to the site. For those looking for non electric pitches, pick the quiet Riverside area, or the Orchard View to be close to the facilities and recreational area. Those wanting an electric hook up can also choose the Orchard View area, plus Badger's Rest, Duck Pond, Kingfisher Meadows, or Sunset Strip areas. The Paddocks gives guests easy access to the swimming pool and shop. The Copse is close to the accessible facilities, and for those looking for some privacy, Willow Walk is set in a secluded corner of the site. All pitches measure 10m x 10m, except the Duck Pond pitches, which measure 10m x 8m. All electric pitches have access to a 10 amp hook up. Sandown Beach, known for its golden sands and traditional pier, is a ten minute drive, or 30 minute walk via the Red Squirrel Trail. Once you're on the waterfront, you can access both The Isle of Wight Coastal Path and the Culver Down walk for scenic coastal strolls. Adgestone Vineyard is just a five minute drive, or ten minute walk, from the site, and offers wine tastings and tours. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times. Open fires and BBQs are both permitted, but must be raised off the ground.

Onsite facilities include toilets and showers, with family and accessible facilities, plus a washing up area. You'll also have access to an outdoor pool, open seasonally from May until September. The pool is only open to booked and registered guests, and hourly slots can be booked on the day of your swim.

At the heart of the site is a recreation and events field, with space for games, with football nets, a slide and a swing, plus there's table tennis to keep little ones entertained. Starlink WiFi is available to help you stay connected.

The site is also home to a fishing lake where catch-and-release carp fishing is permitted as part of your guest experience. Note that you must hold a valid Environment Agency rod licence to fish.

Fishing is also allowed from mid June onwards in the River Yar, which runs alongside the site. For scenic walks and cycle routes, plenty of pathways run through Sandown Meadows, the Nature Reserve next to the site.

There's a handy shop with campsite essentials, plus a cafe, Natures Nook, serving up hot and cold drinks, delicious bakes, burgers, pizza and jacket potatoes. There's also an ice cream station for a refreshing treat!

For further dining options, The Squirrel's Rest is a 15 minute walk away. There are also several other pubs and restaurants, shops and supermarkets within a ten minute drive in Sandown. Plus, the site is a five minute drive, or ten minute walk, from Adgestone Vineyard for tasting experiences and tours.

A note from the site themselves...

Adgestone had been quiet for four years, but the stories from families who holidayed here told us it was worth bringing back.

I love its peaceful countryside, the river and lake, but most of all seeing children playing outside and families enjoying proper time together. We're creating somewhere with the warmth of traditional camping, thoughtful improvements and room to make new memories.

I'm proudest of our team for turning an abandoned campsite into a place full of laughter again, and hearing returning guests say, "I remember this!"

Things to do on site and in the Adgestone area

Onsite there are a range of things to keep you busy, from a heated outdoor swimming pool (open seasonally from May until September), to a private fishing lake with catch and release carp fishing. There is also a shop, cafe and ice cream parlour onsite, plus Sandown Meadows Nature Reserve next door with walking and cycling trails alongside the River Yar.

At the heart of the site is a large recreational field with football goals, plus plenty of space for little ones to play, and there's table tennis, too!

Just a ten minute drive away, or 30 minute walk, from the site is Sandown Beach. Known for its miles of soft, golden sand, safe waters for family paddling, and traditional pleasure pier.

Behind the beach, you'll find the esplanade, packed with seaside cafes, ice cream parlours and fish and chip shops. Here, you can also access both the Isle of Wight Coastal Path and the scenic Culver Down walk (with a handy stop in the Culver Haven Inn!)

Further beaches include family friendly Shanklin Beach (10 minutes), Compton Bay for surfing and hunting fossilised dinosaur footprints and Freshwater Bay for water sports (both 40 minutes).

A visit to The Needles, the Isle of Wight's iconic chalk stacks and historic lighthouse, is a must-do (55 minutes). Ride the chairlift down the cliffside for views over Alum Bay and walk along the multicoloured sand cliffs, or take a boat trip to the edge of the rocks.

History buffs won't want to miss a trip to Osborne House to see a glimpse into the lives of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (25 minutes). A trip to Carisbrooke Castle should also be top of your list, a medieval fortress letting you walk through 1,000 years of history and once serving as the royal prison for King Charles I (also 25 minutes).

For a walk on the wild side, you can get up close to lions, tigers and other animals at Wildheart Animal Sanctuary (10 minutes), where little ones can learn about the importance of animal rescue.

For more family fun, step back in time in a vintage train carriage on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway (20 minutes), or hunt for dinosaurs and explore the lands of imagination at Blackgang Chine (30 minutes).
