About the site

Get back to nature at this eco friendly, off-grid campsite. On the boundary of the Lake District National Park, the site is nestled between glorious beaches and picturesque walking country, the best of both worlds! Three smaller pitches, Foxglove, Snowdrop and Bluebell are spaced among wildflowers and trees. Each of these pitches welcome smaller tents and up to three guests. Bluebell is the most secluded and has the perk of being shaded during the day by nearby trees. Due to its location, this is the only pitch where BBQs and fire pits are not allowed. For families and groups of up to four, Primrose pitch allows a large family tent or a few smaller ones together, with stunning views over the estuary and Black Combe. Larger groups of up to eight can hire Daisy Camp. This spacious large grass pitch sits at the front of the site with wonderful panoramic estuary views and a private kitchen area with a sunken fire pit. Up to eight guests can pitch up here, with multiple tents allowed. A large BBQ and smoker can be hired if you wish to take your outdoor cooking to the next level. If you want the whole place to yourself, Hazel Mount Fellside also welcomes exclusive site hire, allowing up to 20 guests at a time. The site has the environment and local wildlife at its forefront. The site is designed to not affect its surroundings, but this does mean the terrain can be a little wild so be sure to pack trainers or walking boots. BBQs and fire pits are available to hire onsite, perfect for a spot of al fresco cooking. Great for toasting marshmallows and just taking in the breathtaking views while waiting to enjoy the night sky. Dogs are allowed too, with plenty of walking routes for you and your four-legged friends.

"Truly a beautiful site and Ruth was such a wonderful host who made sure we were comfortable"

A note from the site themselves...

I'm an ecologist by profession and bought this gorgeous plot of land as it had not been intensely farmed. As such it had retained a good amount of biodiversity and was relatively unspoiled. My vision is that my land management enhances this diversity and enables nature to thrive here. I'm happy to share my private little plot of paradise with like-minded, nature loving campers.

The grassy pitches are generously spaced to allow room for wildflowers, invertebrates and visiting birds, whilst also providing guests their own little bubble of paradise during their stay: it's certainly not your typical campsite. If you wish to learn more during your visit as to why Hazel Mount Fellside is so special, please request a personal tour.

During the summer months, the site is grazed by a flock of Hebridean sheep who will happily munch away between the pitches. I look forward to welcoming you to my little plot of paradise, Ruth

Small Tent - Small Non Electric Grass Pitch (Foxglove)Aug 2025

The site is such a beautiful find. Solely ran by Ruth, a truly inspirational woman who has put her heart and soul into creating an off grid spot, as close to wild camping as possible, whilst preserving the natural beauty and needs of the land. Such a lovely spot, incredible views and very peaceful. It's a site for those conscious of respecting the land and treading softly, it definitely encouraged my daughter and I to think more deeply about the impact human beings can have on nature. A very special stay. Highly recommended for those seeking a close to nature experience.

Medium Tent - Medium Non Electric Grass Pitch (Primrose)Aug 2025

This campsite was beautiful in every way! The views! The feel of the place! The values! Ruth, the host! The chickens and sheep! We stayed on Primrose which had the most breath-taking view, it felt like it was there just for us! Although the campsite was near full, it very much didn't feel like it, there are separate pitches perfectly spaced between each other with mowed paths to access everywhere, which made it feel even more private. Most of the time, it felt like we had the whole site to ourselves! It was our first time experiencing a composting loo too and honestly, although sceptical at first, I was surprised at how clean and easy to use it was! No complaints from me! Same goes for the shower! The borrowing library was such a lovely touch with essentials and things to keep everyone entertained, it was nice to be thought of! Ruth too is a wonderful lady, she truly has gone above and beyond what we expected from her and you can see how much love she pours into this land and everyone who calls it home! I can't wait to come back with friends and show them the little treasure we've found!

Small Tent - Small Non Electric Grass Pitch (Snowdrop)Aug 2025

There is a lot to be said about this quirky, beautiful campsite.. First of all Ruth is an absolute gem. Super helpful and will go above and beyond for you to make sure you are all set for the experience ahead.. After a quick tour around the site, briefing of its history and everything the campsite stands for you can take your belongings to your own personal spot away from other campers. You share the grounds with some sheep & 6 other campers - I found this the perfect amount for the site, and the car park too. The facilities are excellent, the car park is easy to get in, the toilet is a composting one and was very clean! there’s a little shower area, you get plenty of drinking water and there’s an honesty cupboard next to the recycling area with snacks, treats, books and games. I found that the views here were some of the best at any campsite I’ve stayed at.. it’s perfect for walkers, photography, or writers, the location is also perfect for the coast as It’s only a short journey to Millom. To summarise, I can’t wait to book it again.. I don’t need to tell you to book it, just read the reviews.. Perfect views Great location Amazing host Ace wild camp experience Car park Great facilities Water Snacks Fire pits
