Campsite aerial

Birchbank is a small campsite on a Lake District sheep farm, located on the fells between Coniston Water and the Duddon Estuary. The site has a small stream running through it which the children love to play in and is next to the fell, with footpaths and bridleways directly from the gate making it ideal for walking and cycling.

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesMay 2025

We really enjoyed our stay despite the bad weather. The woman is lovely and assisted us to choose a pitch. The toilets and showers were always clean. It is a bit out from anything but we knew this before we booked and we really enjoyed being away from everything. It was peaceful and quiet. We would definitely recommend staying at this campsite and would definitely consider returning :)

Single Axle Caravan - Non Electric Grass PitchesMay 2025

We had a lovely stay at Birchbank - it's a peaceful, well-kept little site. The only downside was the shower facilities. There are only two showers, and they're quite dated, so on a busy morning it can cause a bit of a wait. That said, it's very reasonably priced and it might be worth considering an upgrade to the facilities and a small increase in price. Linda, who runs the site, is absolutely lovely and works really hard to make everyone feel welcome.

Site's response

We have three showers, there are two in the main facilities and one near the washing up sink.

Lovely site

This site is remote with no phone signal. The views are stunning and our girls love playing in the little stream. The site is very clean. We've stayed twice and would happily stay again.

Large Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesMay 2025

A fantastic camp site, easy to find, more facilities than expected (washer and extension lead in a small utility room). Shower rooms very clean. Overall a brilliant site with great views.

Large Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesMay 2025

We booked this campsite due to the positive reviews and seemingly quiet location. We booked a pitch for a large tent and set ourselves up on the hill. However, by the time we got back to the tent at 8pm, we found tents set up in very close proximity to ours. We were then subject to the two worst nights of camping we've ever had. The people in the tents played music, slammed car doors and shouted until 1am treating it like a music festival. There were signs all over the campsite requesting no noise or loud music after 10pm, but no one enforced this. Dogs were off lead and leaving mess around the tents. It was a bit of chav-fest to be honest, so if you're a family with young children/couple wanting a quiet location then I would avoid. We noticed another couple leave in the night/early morning due to the noise. The site was clean and well maintained (although there were only two showers and toilets for the whole site), so its a shame that there is no one enforced the rules or at least attempted to.

Site's response

I am sorry that you had some noisy neighbours for your stay, I was not aware of the noise or behaviour but if you had informed me I would have told them to be quiet. There are four toilets and three showers for campers, three toilets and two showers in the main facilities and another toilet and shower near the washing up sink.

A great location, you can only see hills in all directions. The only sounds are the cows and sheep on the farm. Facilities are basic but more than adequate.

Perfect!

Small Tent - Electric Grass PitchesMay 2025

I booked 2 pitches for one night. On arrival the host was lovely, she showed us the location of the pitches we could choose from, the location of the toilets/showers. Added bonus here is a fridge freezer. You can use a washing machine/ tumble at a cost which is an added bonus. We had perfect weather for the occasion as the site is well kept and everyone was very gracious about other campers. You are in the middle of area of pure beauty so it's perfect for a night escape. Loads of walking paths/trails around. Only down side is this is a working farm so if your not used to animals or like cows mooing most of the night then do not book here, for us this was fine. They even have a friendly cat that came and spent some time with us.

This is really in the hills great very quiet campsite (apart from the cows!). Clean hot showers. Best couple of nights sleep I've had in a long time. No phone signal on 3 but I thought that was a bonus. Would come back in a heartbeat.

This site delivered absolutely everything I was looking for. Peace and quiet, with endless walks for me and 'mans best friend'. The scenery was to die for and all on the door step. The welcome I got was lovely and the facilities were great. I will 100% be returning, it was lovely.👍

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesSep 2024

Camp site well marked to find from the roads, even in the driving rain and dark! Easy check in. Toilets and wash-up room clean and serviceable. Pitches good size and well marked, level and tidy. Site is quite remote (not a problem for us, good pub ~10 mins easy drive away had hot food & fire). Lots of footpaths and exploring possible from site. Stream running through site would be delightful in warmer/drier weather.

Great location to escape

VW-Type Campervan - Non Electric Grass PitchesSep 2024

We stayed 2 nights in our camper with awning, it was £20 a night. Next to a working farm. We arrived and found our own pitch which were clearly marked. The toilets were clean and there were nice hot showers. There were facilities to wash your pots. Multiple trails directly from the camp site, we hiked to beacon tarn (around 1.5 hours) and turned this into a circular route via Cumbria way. Then heading west. 25 min drive to Coniston. It was very quiet at night.

Amazing campsite, lovely location

First time ever being here. I had a really nice time and although my vehicle had everything I needed, their facilities were clean and well maintained. The location was literally a mile and a bit from the Cumbria way. Would definitely go again.

Nice, very rural

Lovely scenes as rural, hearing cows and nothing else. At a farm so expect some sort of noises but lovely and peaceful. Everything worked. What you expect and get for camping.

Relaxing getaway

VW-Type Campervan - Non Electric Grass PitchesSep 2024

A campsite set amongst the most tranquil settings, surrounded by green fields and gorgeous views. The campsite itself is family friendly and relaxed, as well as a beautiful drive to it. Facilities are standard, a little on the rugged side but that was to be expected. All in all we would certainly visit again, a lovely atmosphere for a chilled out evening!
