About the site

Crake Trees is a friendly camping site based on a family farm, high in the Yorkshire Dales. The family are passionate about regenerative farming and have created a beautiful farm which is rich in wildlife and enjoys a stunning setting in the Westmorland Dales, not far from the Lake District. It's an area of picturesque river valleys, walking routes and more challenging hills and peaks - yet only 15 minutes drive from the M6 and 30 minutes from Penrith. The acres of wild grasses, spacious wild meadows, and access to quiet footpaths make this the perfect place to recharge your batteries and get back to nature. On clear nights, you'll enjoy incredible dark skies, while farm and wildlife safaris run every Saturday, which can be added as an extra. Camping is on around 30 informal and unallocated pitches, set across three acres of wonderful wildflower meadows. All pitches are non-electric and allow tents up to 3.5m x 5.5m. Campfires are not permitted, but fire pits can be hired from the site, subject to availability. Please note that these are cash only. Campervans and box tents have the choice of four grass or four grass and gravel pitches. All pitches have lovely views to the west over farm meadows. No electric hook up or waste disposal, but very close to underfloor heated individual shower rooms and the community kitchen. Car campers are welcome onsite, but only at the site's discretion. Order breakfast baps (freshly made from the site's own pork and eggs) delivered to the kitchen around 8:30am with veggie/vegan options available. Dogs are welcome to join you as long as they are kept on a short lead at all times, including when you are at your pitch (add as an extra when booking). Please note that breeds and crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act are not permitted. No open fires or campfires allowed. Fire pits can be hired from the site and include a fire starter kit. All wood and fuel must be purchased from the site.

Crake Trees is open from 01/04 to 29/09. Pitches from £30/night for 2 people.

Small Tent - Grass Pitches (Two People)Aug 2025

Delightful little campsite, nestled between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales national parks. Ruth and Mike are great hosts, and we'd strongly recommend their breakfast baps! We'll hopefully be back before too long.

Stay here to get some peace and quiet

Medium Tent - Grass Pitches (Two People)May 2025

Nice and quiet site, clean toilets and showers, convenient kitchen area and plenty of space for tents. Really liked it here, will probably return at some point and stay in one of the huts.

Trying to be too many things at once!

Small Tent - Grass Pitches (Two People)Aug 2024

We stayed for 4 nights at the start of August. The campsite was lovely and the shower blocks and kitchen facilities were great. However, there were a few things that occurred during our stay that we weren't expecting. Firstly, the advice in the booking email said not to bring many perishables, however, this is unrealistic when camping. As we found out during our stay, this is because they have free roaming pigs and sheep in the same field as the tents. This is a lovely idea in principle however, not very practical considering when you camp, you want to bring your own food and have it close to where you're sleeping. Secondly, owners of the campsite were friendly and keen to help and provide advice on what they thought we should do with our time whilst on holiday. However, this was always done at our tent side this sometimes making it feel like an invasion of our privacy. As lovely as this was, we felt slightly judged when we said we were going to Windermere to go kayaking as they likened this to Blackpool. Nonetheless we went to Windermere and had a lovely day. Finally, we travelled up from London to the Lakes to seek a peaceful and quiet getaway and we figured as Crake Manor Farm sells itself as 'peaceful grassland meadow' that this would fit the bill. However, on the Saturday evening in a barn conversion on the campsite, we were met with a loud Ibiza classics night. It was lovely to see the local community and other campers getting involved and having such a nice time in a lovely setting. However, the music was quite loud until 10:30pm and extremely close to the tents, which meant trying to fall asleep after a long days walking was less than ideal. Overall a lovely place to stay however, worth checking the schedule if you wish to avoid a noisy Saturday night camping! Thanks!

Site's response

Ahh, I now know who these 2 girls are now. Well it sounds like they had a great time. Firstly, everyone has information emailed regarding "what's on" at Crake Trees. All visitors are prompted to look at our Instagram posts to really see what we are up to (free range pigs, working farm, cumbrian friendliness, country music) so you were amply informed, girls. Secondly, they pitched their tent actually on a public footpath that goes along a short stretch of the campsite. Also, everyone going to the shower blocks or wandering round the 5 acre camping field had to walk right past their tent. I personally asked them if they really wanted to pitch in that particular place, when the rest of the campsite has more private pitches, they said "no thanks, we love it here." Well obviously, they were girls who enjoyed loud noise, beating music and crowds (Windermere in August). As above, all visitors have full access to information. The live music which we have in the Combine Shed (not a converted barn) each weekend in July and August plays from 7:30 to 10pm. All is finished for quiet time which is from 10:30pm. But, you know what, we are so joyful having a campsite and glamping site busy and full of happy families, couples and single travellers. Two very glum and haughty people maybe just made a poor holiday choice, and that's a real pity.

A note from the site themselves...

For over 40 years, we have enjoyed welcoming visitors to the farm. Our family, Laura, William and India have grown up with the ever-changing mix of cultures, accents and adventure that visitors bring with them. So the years go by, children grow up, and we now have grandchildren.

Our farm is an ecological mix of agriculture and tourism, now known as an Agritourism business. The farm is also part of the Higher Level Country Stewardship scheme. With a herd of grazing Belted Galloways, pasture-fed sheep, free-range breeding pigs and hens.

We grow barley and oats, and harvest our native grassland into hay. We have not used artificial fertiliser or insecticide sprays for over 18 years. We sow fields of wild bird mix and have many ponds that sweep down through the farm.

You will find our campsite amongst wild grasses and flowers, with space to wander, so much wildlife to see, and a sky full of stars to light your walk to the shower once darkness falls. Crake Trees is our home, our farm, our business, our whole life really...... Ruth and Mike

Things to do on site and in the Penrith area

Visit Lowther Castle (25 minutes) to explore the 50 acres of Dan Pearson-inspired gardens, walk or cycle around the thousand acres of the rewilded Lowther valley. With a living museum and a modern cafe. Brougham Castle at Penrith is a great place to discover all about the area's famous northern feminist, Lady Anne Clifford.

Acorn Bank National Trust gardens, orchards, woodland trails and a working water mill are just ten minutes from the site.

The farm has direct access to many miles of self-guided walks and cycling trails.

Take a circular route exploring the Dales via the local village, or hike in the footsteps of history along Lady Anne's Way. For those with a bike, there's a wide selection of routes to suit all levels. Haweswater Reservoir is within a half hour and offers an opportunity to explore a vast wilderness that feels remote as time has forgotten.

Walk the many footpaths that strike out or pass through the farms - there are maps and guides to borrow in the community kitchen. From a ten minute walk to the villages of Crosby Ravensworth or Maulds Meaburn to a whole day trek over the fells past Black Dub, where all you will meet is the odd sheep, a lonely curlew, a flock of skylark or an indignant grouse.

Remember, your dog must be on a short lead when on the fells or through agricultural land.

A visit to Rheged (30 minutes) is a must for dull or rainy days. A vast underground complex of local providence shopping, art galleries, exhibitions and the largest cinema in the north, owned by the Dunning family who also own the famous Westmorland services. Like Daylesford on the motorway!

Other attractions nearby include:

  • Lowther Castle and Gardens - 100's of acres of wilderness and formal gardens with the Wild Castle experience that is unique to the north. Perfect for a meet up or just lose yourself for the day (20 minutes)
  • Brougham Castle - A great place to bike to or explore this informal and wild castle on the side of the busy A66. A favourite home of Lady Anne Clifford, it's all secret stairways and wide open courtyards. English Heritage (25 minutes)
  • Penrith Castle and Penrith town - Officially the best town to live in and around in the northwest, with lots of indie shops, local cafes and bars, a great cinema, plus lots of car charging points (30 minutes)
  • Penrith and Eden Museum - Small independent museum that is fascinating and full of Penrith history (30 minutes)
  • Ullswater Lake - Canoe, paddleboard, play ducks and drakes, take afternoon tea at one of the lakeside hotels or wander the footpaths looking for daffodils (40 minutes)
  • National Trust properties - The closest is just 10 minutes away or a 30 minute bike ride. Acorn Bank with extensive apple orchards, an important physic garden, ponds full of rare newts and footpaths through the woods to the tiny farmyard and watermill. Or Sizergh Castle near Kendal, combine your trip with Levens Hall, two ancient and fascinating estates within a mile of each other.
