Things to do in Ullswater
Ullswater, nestled in the Lake District, is the second biggest lake in the region and one of the deepest. The lake is surrounded by gentle hills and picturesque villages that will appeal to anyone looking for stunning natural landscapes and fun outdoor activities.
The first must-do activity during a visit to the area is a cruise on the lake courtesy of Ullswater Steamers. Take in the superb views at a leisurely pace, sail the placid beauty of the lake and stop at the piers of the Lake District’s idyllic towns. The river curls like a snake through vibrant scenery.
Visitors who are keen to engage with the water more actively can get a taste for the spray sailing, kayaking, canoeing and windsurfing among some world class scenery. After that, refresh with some adrenaline activities on land- quad biking, horse riding, archery and clay pigeon shooting.
The ‘Z’ shape of the mountains in the area is also a fantastic place for walkers to explore on foot. The Ullswater Way is a popular 20 mile course that passes some of the most charming local cottages and a stop for a delicious lunch at the 1863 Bistro Rooms. Don't miss the ramble to Aira Force, either, a spot where rainwater from the fells thunders down in a 65 foot shimmering waterfall,
Cyclists can explore the mountains surrounding the shining lake, or there are excellent routes to Moor Divock or Great Mell Fell.
There are several villages around the lake that will entice visitors to explore beyond the water, including Glenridding, Patterdale and Pooley Bridge. Patterdale sits at the southern end of the lake and is a haven from the more touristic parts of the Lakes, hidden away by the Kirkstone Pass and holding onto a sense of serene rural beauty.
In the towns and villages, a variety of shops, restaurants and pubs provide plenty of entertainment for people who are keen to take a break from outdoor pursuits.
Nearby, step out of the valley to see Dalemain Historic House and Gardens for walks beside the River Eamont backed up with a medieval hall tea room. The house of Hutton-in-the-Forest is another rival for your attention, with lavish rooms, a cupid staircase and beautiful wall designs created by William Morris.
