A note from the site themselves...

Welcome to Church Stile! Our farm sits in the heart of the beautiful Wasdale Valley in the charming village of Nether Wasdale. It's a traditional Lakeland sheep and beef farm with a long and fascinating history.

Church Stile has been here since at least 1547, and in the last 400 years, only three families have cared for this special place. The Knight family farmed here from 1898 until recently and still farm nearby, while the Fletcher family looked after it for around 300 years before them.

The farm itself stretches over 280 acres, including more than 30 acres of beautiful natural woodland. We also have grazing rights on Nether Wasdale Common, where we care for around 700 pure Herdwick ewes. Most of our Herdwick lamb is sold directly to private customers or to The Sawmill Café nearby, as well as to small local butchers.

We love sharing this incredible landscape, its history, and its delicious local produce with our visitors. We hope you enjoy your time here!

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass Tent PitchesJul 2025

Arrived on Thursday 24th of July 2025 and stayed for 4 nights. We were told the campsite was going to get very busy and to pitch so as to use the space with consideration for the later arrivals. It did get busier but it wasn't too crowded and we still had a bit of privacy and our own space. We noticed others pitched tents in groups even though there was a no large groups policy. If they hadn't pitched like that, it might have felt more crowded. The pitch was on a slight slope and there were some patches of mud where a large vehicle had made tracks, but the grass was good and it wasn't too difficult to put pegs in; there were stones in the ground below the turf but it was possible to avoid them. We had the furthest field from the shower block, which meant a 5 minute or so walk each time I wanted to use the WC or shower. A second shower block or shorter journey would have made this a 5 star for facilities. The facilities were good in terms of cleanliness but not 5 stars, which would require more regular and more diligent cleaning. For example, wet WC seat and grass or mud on the shower floor occasionally, and the sink basins had standing water on top of the surfaces. This is a camp site, so I don't expect it to be spotless, but it would need to address those issues to get a 5 star rating. On the positive side, the showers were hot and free, and I never had to queue for a shower and only once had to queue for a WC cubicle, there's also pot washing facilities and free bricks for a fire pit to protect the grass. The shop was well stocked with almost everything you could need, even raincoats and fuel for fires. Some items were tourist prices such as the local sweets. We bought some of the local lamb sausages which were excellent. We had our own fire pit and brought our own fuel, but the site also lends them out for a fee. In terms of location, it was great with easy access to the coast as well as Wast Water, Buttermere and Scafell Pike. The local pub Strands Inn is easily walkable from the site. They served a good range of drinks and food, expect to pay £18-20 per person for a main, and £5.50 a pint. It can get a bit crowded, so booking a table is recommended. There was a small beer garden at the back, dogs were allowed in, and people were using the outside seats at the pub across the road, which appeared to be closed. There was also what looked to be a nice kids play park, though I'm a bit too old to go on it, so can't say how good the swings were, and also a bit of a forest walk and small football pitch on site. It would have been good to have something for slightly older people to do when it was raining or between hikes, such as a table tennis, table football or pool table. There was free Wi-Fi but it was only accessible near the shop, not on the campsite, though I managed to get a few messages to come through at the top of the field.

Lovely site

Small Tent - Non Electric Grass Tent PitchesJul 2025

Lovely campsite, friendly staff, great facilities. Only downside for me was quiet time was from 11pm which I understand is fine for some, but a bit late for my 6 year old. Kids running round screaming until 11pm and I know kids should have fun and you can't please everyone, but maybe 10pm is late enough?
