About the site

Tucked away in the Lake District at the foot of Whinfell Beacon, this rural campsite offers a peaceful, back-to-basics break on a friendly, family-run farm. Surrounded by open countryside and walking trails, it's perfect for those looking to escape into nature. The site offers simple non electric grass pitches, each measuring 7m x 7m, suitable for tents, trailer tents and campervans. There's plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the scenery, with views across Lower Borrowdale. For a little extra comfort, there are two cosy glamping options, each sleeping two. The Blue Door glamping cabin includes a double bed with bedding and towels provided, plus a well-equipped kitchen area with a fridge, freezer, kettle, toaster and cooking equipment. There's also a dining table, heating and electricity, while outside you'll have your own private eco loo hut, along with a BBQ, fire pit, and outdoor table and chairs. The Crabtree Cabin shepherd's hut, set in its own garden, offers similar, complete with a double bed, bedding and towels, a fridge and freezer, a cooker, kettle, toaster, cooking equipment, a dining table with chairs, electric heating, and power sockets. Outside, there is a private eco loo, BBQ, a fire pit and outdoor seating as well. Kendal is just 15 minutes away with shops, cafés and restaurants, while the Yorkshire Dales are within a 20 minute drive for even more walking and cycling routes. Fire pits and BBQs are welcome, just make sure they're raised off the ground. You can grab firewood, eggs and local produce from the small onsite shop for cooking up something delicious under the stars. The site is dog friendly too, with up to two dogs welcome per pitch and one in the cabin.

Pitches are available from the end of May until the end of October. Glamping is available from 1st March until the end of October. Pitches from £20/night for 2 people.

In a world where "campsites" are increasingly offering cabins and motorhome/caravan pitches only it was refreshing to encounter an authentic camping area with no electric pitches, a compost toilet and an environment conscious ethos. There are a couple of cabins too if you want to experience the rural location but aren't quite ready for tent life. The location is beautiful, nestled amid a working lake district hill farm. access is via an unpaved farm track which adds to the off grid feeling of the site. The site is only a few minutes from Kendal, with easy access to amenities if you need them but feels like its in the middle of nowhere. A wonderful spot to base yourself for exploring the Lake District.

Campsite was lovely and rural. Owners were friendly and attentive. Campsite would benefit from an extra toilet, toilet was kept clean by owner during stay. Showers were basic, they would be better with PVC shower board instead of plywood to stop mould, as showers were mouldy and smelt of mould. Would recommend site but would advise it is a basic site. We have stayed at many sites and for the same money, have had better facilities. There are many hidden rocks on campsite and this could affect cars/vans as we hit a rock.

We started Cockin Farm Campsite because we absolutely love the countryside, it's in our blood! Growing up on farms, we've always been outdoors, whether it's hiking, exploring, or just soaking up the fresh air.

We wanted to create a place where people can escape the hustle, get a real feel for farm life, and meet some of our friendly animals up close.

It's all about sharing the beauty of nature, a bit of adventure, and giving everyone the chance to see how farms really work. And where better to place to do it than in the forgotten corner of the Lake District!

Sizergh Castle is just 25 minutes from the site. Looked after by the National Trust, it has beautiful gardens, a grand house, and woodland trails.

The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction is 35 minutes away in Bowness-on-Windermere. Step into the world of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck and all their friends. It's full of fun displays and activities, and great for younger children and fans of the famous stories.

Windermere, the largest lake in England, is 30 minutes from the campsite. You can take a boat trip, go paddle boarding, wild swimming or just enjoy waterside trails!

If you're looking for adventure, head to Brockhole on Windermere (35 minutes). This outdoor centre has a treetop trail, boat hire, archery, and more.
