Things to do in Kendal
There’s something about Kendal that inspires adventure in everyone. Take the scenic route around town, roam Kendal’s surrounding fells, hit refresh in our green spaces or try a new activity.
Fancy a self-guided tour to see the town itself? Choose between four Children’s Trails, an intriguing History Trail or there’s even a Beer, Wine & Food Trail. All with downloadable guides and maps.
The Kendal Museum is a fantastic place to discover the fascinating history of Kendal town. There are some wonderful collections of local history and archaeology. You'll see the exhibits of the town during prehistoric times all the way to the present day. There are also artefacts from Roman forts and lots of objects relating to natural history.
Kendal Castle, probably late 12th century, is now a ruin, but worth exploring. From here you can get brilliant views over the town. Kendal Museum has an exhibition telling the story of the castle, its people, the life of the town and a reconstruction of the castle.
The parish church, Holy Trinity, is mostly 18th century, but has been a place of worship since the 13th century. It's Cumbria’s largest parish church.
You can walk from the centre of Kendal up to Scout Scar or there’s a small car park nearby. Scout Scar is a limestone ridge overlooking the beautiful Lyth Valley. A fairly easy circular walk offers breath-taking views all the way to the Lakeland fells and Morecambe Bay.
Sizergh is a beautiful medieval house and estate. The house is great to explore, and the huge estate has beautiful pastures, orchards and a semi-natural woodland. The stunning garden has a pond, lake, a national collection of hardy ferns and a superb limestone rock garden.
Lakeland Farm Park is a working farm with lots of animals to see including ferrets, llamas, alpacas, goats, horses and a donkey called Winston. Other activities including an ever-changing maize maze, trampolines, giant fraughts, tractor and trailer rides and an indoor play area.

Winding pathways give Serpentine Woods its name, and there’s so much fun to be had. Looking over Kendal, Serpentine Woods was originally grazing land on Kendal Fell. It’s a haven of wildlife, home to a range of bird species, foxes and squirrels. Trees and shrubs surround the winding paths that create around 3 miles of magical walking through the woods. The Alphabet Trail is punctuated with sculptures, creating a magical experience for all the family.
For the perfect rainy day activity, or any day come to think of it, get crafty with paint and pottery at Pandemonium Pots. The idea is simple: you’ll select a piece of pottery from a wide variety of designs and shapes and sizes - these could even be in the mould of animals or magical creatures! You’ll then have the basis for your very own wild creation to decorate with decoupage and every colour under the sun, which the dedicated team will professionally glaze for you to take home.
With its location on the National Cycle Network routes so close to the Lakes, Kendal is a perfect base to explore the wider Lake District and Morecambe Bay area on your bike. The Kendal Cycling Guide offers five do-in-a-day rides on country lanes and quiet roads from Kendal. You can pick up a leaflet from Kendal’s Tourist Information Centre.
Hawkshead Brewery is in the village of Staveley, half way between Kendal and Windermere, offering scheduled tours every day including a pint or two halves at the end of your tour.
Travel slightly further afield you’ll find Windermere, famous for its lake beautifully surrounded by mountain peaks.
Windermere Quays is a Marina which provides boats for hire, so you can go sailing with a family of up to six on Lake Windermere. They hire out electrically powered boats, so you're not only being environmentally friendly, but you can also get closer to the water-based wildlife without frightening them off.
The World of Beatrix Potter is a vibrant family attraction, bringing to life all 23 enchanting stories in a magical recreation of the beautiful Lake District countryside. The exhibition features favourite characters from the famous books including Peter Rabbit and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, and the outdoor Peter Rabbit Garden offers visitors a timeless view of Mr McGregor's vegetable patch.
