Things to do on site and in the Battle area

One of the biggest attractions in the area is Battle Abbey, which tells the story of how a Norman army invaded and defeated the English. This Benedictine abbey is built on the fateful site, and captures the atmosphere of an intense period in history.

Make a trip to Batemans, the home of Rudyard Kipling, to better understand this legendary writer. It's an idyllic cottage in the Sussex countryside that provides a window into Kipling's world.

Be sure to ride the heritage Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway for a family day out before you leave. Kids will want to see the incredible steam trains.

Take a trip to Rye, or enjoy the seaside feel at the famous Hastings where you can visit smugglers caves, the Blue Reef Aquarium and Hastings Castle.

Other great attractions in the area include:

  • Wylands International Angling Centre
  • Yesterday's World in Battle
  • Hastings Beach
  • Senlac Hill- where King Harold deployed his army in 1066
  • Fore Wood- Site of Special Scientific Interest
