Things to do in Hastings

At the heart of 1066 country, made famous by England's defeat in a battle against the French, lies the town of Hastings. In more modern terms, you'll find it on England's sunny south coast in East Sussex, dominated by stoney cliffs and a cheery harbour. Today, it's a gorgeous seaside town, but with echoes of a fascinating era in the country's history.

For those who love to dig deeper, the town is well known for the Battle of Hastings during the Norman conquest of England and today visitors can explore the remains of Hastings Castle. The fortress was built just after William the Conqueror's coronation, to help cement his hold on the nation and wandering the ruins will bring the whole experience to life for you.

Satisfy your curiosity further with the lovely Old Town, chock-full of historic buildings, where there are many shops and pubs to discover too. There's an artsy community feel and it's the perfect place to browse for quirky souvenirs or breakfast on artisan bread.

Another architectural highlight includes the pretty St Leonard's Church (Church in the Wood) in Hollington or for something more rustic, watch the fishing fleet go out after a catch from their charming black huts at the seaside.

Keen for fun indoor activities? Then head to 1066 Target Sports where exciting activities include archery, axe throwing and air rifle shooting.

Sit back and relax, Hastings has a lovely choice of outdoor spaces for visitors. Hastings Beach is the perfect bucket-and-spade spot, backed up by Alexandra Park, Old Roar Gill and Coronation Wood which are picturesque and tranquil spots to visit. Hastings Country Park is an enormous coastal beauty, where Exmoor ponies and a herd of cattle are allowed to roam freely for conservation, but also to put a smile on the faces of visitors.

There is a great selection of museums to visit in Hastings too. Check out Hastings Fishermen's Museum, the Shipwreck Museum, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery for fascinating attractions to explore. The True Crime Museum will clue you up on forensic evidence, set in the eerie atmosphere of underground caves.

Lots of family fun can be had in Hastings. Dive into the world of smuggling at Smugglers Adventure, enjoy a fun ride on the Hastings Miniature Railway and the Cliff Railways, as well as see the animals at the Blue Reef Aquarium.

Nearby interesting places to visit include the village of Pett Level with its attractive beach, the High Weald AONB. Before you leave, Herstmonceux Castle has some tanatlising secrets to uncover, such as a Woodhenge, 300 year old chestnut trees, and a secret garden. The next stop on your tour of the coast could be Eastbourne, to continue exploring.
