Birchbank is a small campsite on a Lake District sheep farm, located on the fells between Coniston Water and the Duddon Estuary. The site has a small stream running through it which the children love to play in and is next to the fell, with footpaths and bridleways directly from the gate making it ideal for walking and cycling.

Almost wild camping... but with simple facilities

Just loved this site. Two miles off the main road along winding single track road through the hills and moors. Fairly small site but plenty of space between pitches and lovely views. Friendly welcome. Facilities are basic but kept immaculately clean, and included washing machine, tumble drier, fridge and freezer for freezer packs. Beautiful walks in all directions from the site. The site is on a working farm so expect the background sound of cows, sheep, tractors and loads of bird song. For anyone who likes the idea of wild camping but still loves a hot shower and clean toilets, this is perfect.
A nice 'quiet' wilderness stay

If you want a place in the middle of South Lakes farmland, this is ideal. Placed in a good location for walkers, or those wanting to ramble in the countryside. A quiet location, only farm animals and occasional farm machinery with early morning songbirds. One piece of advice, please be respectful of the simple suggestions about the quiet nature of the site. Unfortunately we were camping next to someone who thought it would be a good idea to fly his drone at 7.15am and then again at 10pm!

We stayed at this campsite in June 2022 with our two small dogs. It has the most stunning views, and the toilets and showers are always kept clean and has toilet rolls. Nice to see the farm running. If you are a walker, there's lots of walking routes. Very spacious too, not so close to each other. We arrived early to pitch our tent and, as the previous pitchers had left, we could pitch up when we arrived. Nice to see the sunset going down. You have to walk over the hill to receive your Wifi or telephone reception. But it is nice to get away and have no reception on your telephone for a while. Owners are lovely too if you need anything they will help. Our table had broken and got some glue from the owners.

Nice campsite, with lovely views. It is out of the way, so very quiet. Lovely to hear the farm animals and the cuckoo in the morning. Owner was very welcoming. Shared toilet facilities but wasn't a problem. 😊

Lovely, quiet, small campsite surrounded by farmland. 20-30 min drive to Coniston on pretty little roads. Hot showers, very clean and tidy.

We had a brilliant stay. Quiet and peaceful site. Back-to-basics vibes but with clean facilities. We were pleased that pitches are so far apart and all campers were spread out across two fields. Lovely walks nearby and the stream running through the middle was perfect for our toddler to play and splash. 15 minute drive from the gorgeous Ulverston Town centre which has everything you would need. Showers were free and never any queue for the toilets. Washing up area was spotless. The cows in the barn were brilliant background noise. We will definitely visit again.
