Wick River Campsite is the perfect spot to explore the beauty of the Caithness countryside situated along the riverbanks in a peaceful, secluded part of Wick. Tents and tourers are welcome across the site's range of electric and non electric grass and hardstanding pitches. Conveniently located along the NC500 route and just a ten minute walk into the town of Wick and to the coast, you will be in a prime location for exploring the Highlands.

About the site


Located on the North Coast 500 and just a ten-minute drive to Reiss Sands, this site makes for an ideal getaway in the Highlands, exploring the beauty of Caithness, or a great place for an overnight stop-off. A ten minute walk will take you into the town of Wick where you will find a railway station, a harbour and plenty of restaurants and pubs too! Tent campers are welcome across the electric and non electric grass pitches, whilst motorhomes caravans and campervans can also opt for an electric hardstanding pitch with a 16 amp hook up. Roof tents are also permitted on all pitches except for the smaller ones. This site is part of a community enterprise, meaning a stay here will contribute to the continued improvement of the site or local projects that will improve life for locals and guest experiences. Ideal for a stop off along the NC500 or for a longer stay to explore Caithness, this site is just 25 minutes from John o'Groats, the most distant point from Land's End in Cornwall. BBQs are welcome on site, great if you enjoy al fresco cooking. However, please note that campfires and fire pits are not allowed, sorry. If you are looking to bring your four-legged friends, they are more than welcome as long as they are on the lead. There is a riverside walk that you can take straight from the campsite, great for a dog walk or a family bike ride.

Site facilities include a separate female and male facility block, each equipped with toilets, six hot showers, underfloor heating, changing benches, shaver points, and hand dryers. The female block includes a hair drying station. There are two accessible rooms (with pull cord alarm systems), one featuring toilet only facilities and the other with a toilet and shower.

Guests have access to a family shower room, offering a changing bench, baby changing facilities, plus a waste disposal.

You will find a communal fridge/freezer, an indoor washing up area with four sinks, a phone charging station (£2 per use), and a 24-hour coin-operated launderette including two washing machines plus two dryers. Free WiFi is available throughout the site. In reception, there is a shop that stocks essentials and food items, along with a coffee vending machine and lounge area.

There is a play park next door for little ones. A Co-op is also a ten minute walk away. There is a selection of pubs and restaurants in Wick, also a ten minute walk from the site.

At Wick River Campsite, guests can check-in between 2pm and 7pm. Check out is due by 11am on your last day.

Yes, Wick River Campsite is dog friendly. Up to three dogs are welcome per pitch. Please note, breeds and crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act are not permitted.

When you arrive at Wick River Campsite, guests will need to head to reception to check-in. Vehicles over 2.8m high should call the campsite before arrival, as you will need to use the alternative entrance on Station Road due to the restricted headroom underneath the railway bridge on Riverside Drive. On the day of your departure, everyone will just need to make sure they leave no rubbish behind and check out by the allocated time.

Wick River Campsite allows groups of up to seven guests to book together. Group bookings of 8+ people are not allowed, unless by prior arrangement. Hen and stag parties are not accepted.

A note from the site themselves...

The importance of the campsite to the trust cannot be overstated, as the community benefits from the site, which allows us to progress with many more projects for years to come and allows the town of Wick to prosper.

In June 2022, the Wick Development Trust took over ownership of the site. Under the new ownership, the campsite operates as a not-for-profit community enterprise with all profits generated being reinvested to improve the site's facilities or used to fund community projects around Wick to make the town a better place to live and visit.

With the town of Wick just a ten minute walk from the site, you can visit the harbour, learn about the history of the area at The Wick Heritage Museum, or explore the local shops and cafes.

Head to Pulteney Distillery (5 minutes) for a tour on the journey of their single malt, you'll even get a chance to try a dram of a few! Or, hop on a wildlife-spotting boat from Wick and spot seals, puffins and other marine life!
